Overview

In recent theological thinking a wide gap exists between two schools. Conservatives reiterate time-worn conceptions. Progressives proclaim views so far in advance that only specialists can keep pace with their rate of speed. Between the two the great mass of Christians, dissatisfied with the old theology because of its obvious inadequacy, yet not understanding the new, stand in perplexity, uncertain what to believe. All such need to know that the new theology, wherein true, is really involved in, and as yet but partially evolved from, the old. Theology is but man's attempt to state his conception of the divine nature and the divine laws. As man develops in capacity to appreciate the Infinite, and perceives ever a little more clearly the operations of divine energy and the expression of divine thought, his theology must change; it cannot remain at a standstill. But he will need no new Bible; he simply needs to understand the old Bible better.
