Given its south-of-the-border setting, it's not surprising that there is plenty of Latin flavor in Alan Silvestri's score to the Brad Pitt and Julia Roberts romantic comedy, The Mexican. Overt Latin nuances pop up in the opening song, "Main Title," in which the slowly building string arrangement and blaring cornet beckon a bullfighter's fanfare. Continuing the theme are "Oye" and "Oye, Oye," which feature contributions from seasoned sidemen, including Abraham Laboriel Air Supply, Alex Acuna Chick Corea, Paulinho Da Costa Dizzy Gillespie, and George Doering David Foster. For "Blame Shifting" and the foreboding "10% Clint," Silvestri even borrows the signature whistle and wailing harmonica from Ennio Morricone's many...

For "Blame Shifting" and the foreboding "10% Clint," Silvestri even borrows the signature whistle and wailing harmonica from Ennio Morricone's many spaghetti western scores. The only non-Silvestri track that keeps the Spanish vibe going is Mexican-born Esquivel's kitschy organ-driven shuffle "El Cable." Otherwise, the rest of the soundtrack comprises a hodgepodge of pop songs, including War's reggae-flavored "Why Can't We Be Friends," Nancy Sinatra's protofeminist anthem "These Boots Are Made for Walkin'," and Men Without Hats' quirky new wave gem "Safety Dance." By blending Silvestri's dramatic score with an eclectic mix of lighthearted songs, The Mexican is as refreshing as a cold margarita on a hot summer's day. Dave Gil de Rubio
