VOYA - Kristi Sadowski
Rosen's new The Contemporary World series contains four volumes from popular periods in history. These include prehistory and the ancient world, the medieval and modern periods, Modern era through World War II, and the contemporary world. Each volume contains a table of contents, brief glossary, index, and suggestions for further information. Cluttered with photographs and densely packed with information, these books would be a good starting point for research projects. What sets these texts apart is the organization of subjects. The majority of chapters are divided by country, but within the chapters, each page is assigned a topic briefly covering the entire span of that event or issue. Additionally, there is a timeline of the major events of each issue at the bottom of the relevant page. This would probably be a good resource for AP History students to acquire a basic comprehension of events and movements. The varying format—two columns on some pages and up to four on others—ensure there is not a bit of unused space. The effect of this is more than overwhelming, making these texts unsuitable for casual or cover-to-cover reading, and intimidating to teens and adults alike. Considering they attempt to span nearly nine thousand years of human history in four sleek volumes, this is unsurprising.
