Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Joella Peterson
With the popularity of the Avengers in movie theaters, many young readers will look forward to a picture book explaining the origins of the Avenger characters. In this particular version, Loki decides he wants to become King instead of Thor, so he goes to Earth to create a distraction that will hopefully destroy his brother. Loki tricks the Incredible Hulk into stopping a train full of people. Of course a multitude of heroes step up to save the day—including Thor, Iron Man, Ant-Man, and Wasp. Soon they are all fighting the Incredible Hulk while Loki tries to gain power. Eventually, Thor figures out what is happening and the "real" heroes join together to conquer and save the day, hero-style. This is a fun book and, even though it is mostly told in a passive voice, young readers will want it read to them over and over again. The illustrations are bright, and though not comic-style like the inspiration, they will leave readers with no doubt as to which characters are which. One of the only downfalls is that many youngsters who see the Avengers characters on movie posters might wonder where their favorite hero is, because they are missing from the book (like Captain America or Black Widow to name a few).
