Overview

Revised and expanded to include over 1,200 quotations, The Military Quotation Book brings together the wisdom of fallen heroes and living politicians, honored statesman and rebellious writers--quoting official edicts as well as off-the-record remarks.
Among the most authoritative--and the most opinionated--are:
*General Douglas MacArthur--"It is fatal to enter any war without the will to win it."
*Winston Churchill--"Courage is rightly esteemed the first of human qualities."
*Stalin--"Everyone imposes his own system as far as his army can reach."
*Voltaire--"An admiral has to be put to death now and then to encourage the others."
*Dwight D. Eisenhower--"Nothing is easy in war."
*Franklin D. Roosevelt--"A nation does not have to be cruel to be tough."
For everyone who loves the military, for history buffs, speechmakers, veterans, and anyone in active military service, The Military Quotation Book is a loaded canon of memorable expressions.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Charlton, editor of two previous editions of this title, plus The Executives Quotation Book and numerous other titles, has revised his work to include entries from the 21st century. The quotations cover various topics such as the causes of war, fear, mothers and sons, tactics, avoiding the fight, science, the hell that is war, politicians, and pacificism. Some of the material is profound, thoughtful, or prophetic, while other entries are humorous. A wide variety of authors are included, e.g., Mohandas Gandhi, Napoleon Bonaparte, Euripides, Mata Hari, Franz Joseph Strauss; in addition to early and current military leaders, statesmen, religious leaders, philosophers, actors, and common people are featured. However, the lack of a table of contents, an index, or appearance of the quotes in alphabetical order limits the use of the book for serious research. VERDICT While it is mainly a browsing item, with its more than 1,100 entries, military enthusiasts and researchers may find this more interesting than books of general quotations.—Eldon Younce, Anthony P.L., KS

WARS AND WHY THEY START

There never is a convenient place to fight a war when the other man starts it.
ADMIRAL ARLEIGH A. BURKE
Stand your ground. Don’t fire unless fired upon, but if they mean to have a war, let it begin here!
JOHN PARKER
Although war is evil, it is occasionally the lesser of two evils.
MCGEORGE BUNDY
It is far easier to make war than to make peace.
GEORGES CLEMENCEAU
War will exist until that distant day when the conscientious objector enjoys the same reputation and prestige that the warrior does today.
JOHN F. KENNEDY
The tendency to aggression is an innate, independent, instinctual disposition in man … it constitutes the most powerful obstacle to culture.
SIGMUND FREUD
War will never cease until babies begin to come into the world with larger cerebrums and smaller adrenal glands.
H. L. MENCKEN
War is a biological necessity.
FRIEDRICH A. J. VON BERNHARDI, German cavalry general
War is life multiplied by some number that no one has ever heard of.
SEBASTIAN JUNGER, War
War is to man what maternity is to a woman. From a philosophical and doctrinal viewpoint, I do not believe in perpetual peace.
BENITO MUSSOLINI
Most sorts of diversion in men, children and other animals, are in imitation of fighting.
JONATHAN SWIFT
Most quarrels are inevitable at the time; incredible afterwards.
E. M. FORSTER
