Children's Literature - Suzanne Javid
The Milky Way is not really made of milk but it does look white. It is our galaxy and it is filled with planets and about two hundred billion stars. Our sun is one of those stars. Supported by national science standards related to earth science, this title attempts to support early readers by images, repetitive phrases and words but falls short. A glossary section defines subject-specific vocabulary. A table of contents, read more, Internet sites, and index are also included. Two-page spreads contain informational text on the left and full-page color photographs on the right. Large text, bold chapter headings, numbered pages and two hundred seventeen words provide science text best read with or by an adult. Early readers may need assistance in understanding some concepts. For example, the author describes the Milky Way as very big and taking light about 100,000 years to travel across it. The next sentence discusses light taking 1,000 years to travel from top to bottom. Altogether, twenty-six words referring to concepts of space, size, time, speed, length, top, bottom, and thickness appear with no other explanation. Not an easy task for emergent readers (or adults) to read, let alone understand in such a short sequence with little explanation. Internet sites related to the subject are available through a "FactHound" website. Although the sites and readers may vary in reading levels and navigation skills, it is likely adult supervision and monitoring may be necessary for children to fully and safely explore the sites. Other titles in the "Exploring Space" series include Black Holes, Constellations, NASA, Space Stations, and Space Vehicles. The publisher's kindergarten through first grade reading level expectations are concerning since this title does not appear to adequately support concept development or beginning readers. Disappointing. Reviewer: Suzanne Javid
