Overview

Ah, the great outdoors. Tents, sleeping bags, nature walks, campfires . . . and maybe a few spells thrown in for good measure! In this entry in the series, Salem takes her first camping trip with the Squirrel Girls, but neither Whammy nor Salem is cut out for roughing it. Salem believes a bit of magic will smooth the way . . . but as usual, it creates more problems than it solves. Salem and Whammy are an irresistible duo in a book perfect for the youngest independent readers.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Amy McMillan
After being criticized by her cat, Whammy, for being an irresponsible quitter, Salem decides to prove him wrong by joining the local Squirrel Scouts troop and committing to sell 50 boxes of cookies. Being a witch, she has a bit of magic at her disposal and uses it (albeit haphazardly) to help her win the award for selling the most cookies of all. Her prize, a camping trip, is less-than-appreciated by her troop, especially when they find out their teacher, Mr. Fink, is a camp leader with an obsession to capture Bigfoot. Hijinks ensue. Salem ends up stumbling into the Bigfoot, turning mean Shelly into a dodo bird and herself into an octopus, in order to save Mr. Fink who has fallen over a cliff; but all turns out (mostly) right in the end. With lively illustrations, heart, and humor, this third installment in the “Misadventures of Salem Hyde” series is a gem for early middle grade readers. Reviewer: Amy McMillan; Ages 8 to 12.
