When 23-year-old Fugees member Lauryn Hill stepped up and recorded her ambitious, sprawling, and superb solo debut, 1998's The Miseducation of Lauryn Hil, she revived a music-business doctrine promoted by James Brown: honest hard work. Hill wrote, produced, and performed on every track on the disc (its title drawn from Carter G. Woodson's book, Mis-Education of the Negro), emulating the "musical journey" production style of a couple of other inspiring masters, Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye. Hill's theme is love -- of self, of family, of community, and of significant other, with many of the songs introduced by a grade-school classroom discussion on the subject. While Hill's rhymes sometimes reach for the highbrow, she also dispenses the folk wisdom of "How you gon' win/When you ain't right within." Singing in a dark, low alto, Hill reveals well-rounded influences and tastes, seeing herself as a vulnerable vocal hybrid of Chaka Khan and Betty Wright on the steamy "Ex-Factor" and soaring above Carlos Santana's resolute guitar on the gorgeous lullaby to her son, "To Zion." Ranging from edgy, insistent hip-hop to horn-enhanced, '70s-flavored soul, Hill is a purist, but -- as on "Every Ghetto," a funky, Wonder-ful tribute to the New Jersey neighborhood she grew up in -- the whole album exudes a timely energy. Her five Grammy wins for this album reveal the scope of her appeal, but this is Hill's personal triumph and celebration.

{The Fugees'} {Lauryn Hill} turns her debut solo album into a life-affirming evocation of love and all the ups and downs that go with it. Mixing in a little bit of pop and straight R&B with the dominating hip-hop, =Miseducation= plays like one long narrative on the joy of spiritual and physical devotion. While its sprawling theme and length are comparable to {Fugee} bandmate {Wyclef Jean's} debut from the previous year, =The Carnival,= its borders are a bit more confining (a lot of this has to do with the grade-school lessons on the history of love that bridge the songs; {Hill} rarely moves beyond its scholarly walls or her own musical ones). And, quite simply, {Hill} is a better rapper than singer, and she does a little too much crooning on =Miseducation= to qualify it as the hip-hop classic it wants to be. Though the Fugees had been wildly successful, and Lauryn Hill had been widely recognized as a key to their popularity, few were prepared for her stunning debut. The social heart of the group and its most talented performer, she tailored The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill not as a crossover record but as a collection of overtly personal and political statements; nevertheless, it rocketed to the top of the album charts and made her a superstar. Also, and most importantly, it introduced to the wider pop world an astonishingly broad talent. Hill's verses were intelligent and hardcore, with the talent to rank up there with Method Man. And for the choruses she could move from tough to smooth in a flash, with a vocal prowess that allowed her to be her own chanteuse (à la Mariah Carey). Hill, of Haitian heritage, rhymed in a tough Caribbean patois on the opener, "Lost Ones," wasting little time to excoriate her former bandmates and/or record-label executives for caving in to commercial success. She used a feature for Carlos Santana ("To Zion") to explain how her child comes before her career and found a hit single with "Doo Wop (That Thing)," an intelligent dissection of the sex game that saw it from both angles. "Superstar" took to task musicians with more emphasis on the bottom line than making great music (perhaps another Fugees nod), while her collaborations with a pair of sympathetic R&B superstars (D'Angelo and Mary J. Blige) also paid major dividends. And if her performing talents, vocal range, and songwriting smarts weren't enough, Hill also produced much of the record, ranging from stun-gun hip-hop to smoother R&B with little trouble. Though it certainly didn't sound like a crossover record, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill affected so many widely varying audiences that it's no surprise the record became a commercial hit as well as a musical epoch-maker.

Lauryn Hill's, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill was an extrodinary album. Every song is excellent, every word reminds me of someone or something in my own life. I am usually a hard rock fan, but this Lauryn Hill album is just spectacular. I know how cheesy it sounds, but it's so true. I like music that I feel. I felt these songs, every word of every song, vibrating within my soul. I understand her, and she understands me.

This cd is amazing. Even if you tend not to like rap or r&b, you'll love this cd. It's one of those albums in which not only the songs played on the radio, but every song is great. Lauryn Hill's voice and songwriting are of the best in the music industry. Ziah, X-factor, and That Thing are personal favorites.

We all saw it coming. Ever since we first saw her do her thing with the rap group, The Fugees, Lauryn Hill's long-awaited solo effort was well worth the wait. She pours her heart and soul into beautiful ballads, soulful messages, and great dance tunes. A definite keeper for your music collection.

Now, this Fugee girl won five Grammy Awards with this hugely popular debut album. The most often played songs in my house are 'The Lost Ones,' 'Ex-Factor,' 'To Zion,' 'That Thing,' and 'Can't Take My Eyes Off of You,' one of two extra tracks. It ought to appeal for just about everyone who likes 'good music.'

This former member of the renowned Fugees set out on her own to give the world this special project, bearing more of a religious influence than a non-religious one, that became one of the big hits of 1998, and caused her to triumph five (or maybe 100) times over at almost every awards ceremony in which she received nominations. Who cares what some people say? I¿m not accustomed to hip-hop either, but...

The entire cd is awe-inspiring. The music spoke to me like an old-time gospel. Each time I listen to this cd I want to sit down with Lauryn and ask her about the arrangements on each track. One in particular is the Ex-Factor. This one provokes the senses like forbidden fruit. I've worn out my cd playing it again and again. This one says so much about how we put our heart and souls into relationships. And Lauryn sings that tune as if she speaks for everyone of us thats felt the pain of a failing union. The cd is awesome in that one person could be so creative in selecting Mr. Carlos Santana, who in my opinion calls down the angels in ''To Zion''; Mary J. Blige, um um um, she and Lauryn spoke in tongues on ''I use to love Him''. I think that if people are serious about the music they listen to and desire music that will touch their hearts and souls then this is a cd for any serious music-lover.

I thought The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill was such a good CD! I am so glad that Lauryn Hill went solo. She was also great with The Fugees but her CD just proved she was great on her own too! I love how the CD has little clips of kids talking about love in between the songs, it is so cute! The songs are great, the lyrics and the vocals are so excellent! Lauryn Hill is such a great artist and she should get all the credit and more that she deserves!

Lauryn is an amazing singer and her voice is beautiful. Ialso love the song Ex-Factor and Nothing Really matters and Doo wop because in Exfactor she talks about a divorce adn it is really sad about a failing union. i cry everytinme i play it because it remins me of my parents almost divorce. i would recommend you buy it right now and you will not be dissapointed. Lauryn Hill from the hit group the Fugees, is back with her solo album " The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill". A grammy winner and probably my favorite album and singer of all time, has come out with the most honest, truthful, and spiritial album of all time. Her lyrics are off the hook, and her words definetly speak the truth! BUY THIS ALBUM....YOU WILL ENJOY IT FOREVER!!Best songs= "Doo Wop (that thing)", "Every Ghetto, Every City"," To Zion", "Ex- Factor", "Everything is Everything".

Major Feat. Not a bum note here, and you get every sound you can get. She can rap like she's singing and sing like she's rapping. Few can match the gravity of Lauryn Hill. When she says something in a sony you'd better believe it, and she's got plenty to say about gender politics and other aspects of Real Life you don't often get in popular music. I miss her making new music as she basically retired after this, but admire her for dodging fame and all it's trappings to raise her kids out of the public eye. She could leave no greater Manifesto behind her, and I'll always have Love in my heart because of this album.
