Gr 4-6-- Andy, fifth grade catcher for the Southside Sluggers, loses his late grandfather's minor league championship ring after a collision with a base runner at home plate. Since the ring is the envy of his peers, and his mother only recently entrusted him with it, he is desperate to find it. Following a fruitless search of home plate, Andy and three friends decide the ring must have been stolen. In the second book, the four friends try to find out who stole their team's mascot, a dog named Home Plate. In both titles, baseball plays a secondary role to the mystery; actual game descriptions are brief but accurate, and character development is superficial. Andy is black, a fact that's deduced from the illustrations, and one of the sleuths is female. Occasional, average-quality pen-and-ink and watercolor drawings, reproduced in black and white and shades of gray, add little to the narrative. Light fare that will be read but probably not remembered, these books will appeal more to mystery fans than to those looking for sports fiction. --Tom S. Hurlburt, La Crosse Public Library, WI
