Meet the Author

Jan Karon, born Janice Meredith Wilson in the foothills of North Carolina, was named after the title of a popular novel, Janice Meredith.

Jan wrote her first novel at the age of ten. "The manuscript was written on Blue Horse notebook paper, and was, for good reason, kept hidden from my sister. When she found it, she discovered the one curse word I had, with pounding heart, included in someone's speech. For Pete's sake, hadn't Rhett Butler used that very same word and gotten away with it? After my grandmother's exceedingly focused reproof, I've written books without cussin' ever since."

Several years ago, Karon left a successful career in advertising to move to the mountain village of Blowing Rock, North Carolina, and write books. "I stepped out on faith to follow my lifelong dream of being an author," she says. "I made real sacrifices and took big risks. But living, it seems to me, is largely about risk."

Enthusiastic booksellers across the country have introduced readers of all ages to Karon's heartwarming books. At Home in Mitford, Karon's first book in the Mitford series, was nominated for an ABBY by the American Booksellers Association in 1996 and again in 1997. Bookstore owner, Shirley Sprinkle, says, "The Mitford Books have been our all-time fiction bestsellers since we went in business twenty-five years ago. We've sold 10,000 of Jan's books and don't see any end to the Mitford phenomenon."

After having lived for seven years in Lenoir, N.C., just down the mountain from Jan Karon, in Blowing Rock...I can say that I have been to Mitford. With each and every book that I have read in the series I felt like I was back in the hills again. I feel certain that I have met most of the 'extra ordinary' characters in these books. Jan has captured the very soul of a time and place where we all want and sometimes need to go. The hardest part about reading these books......it waiting for the next one. Please never stop writing, Jan Karon.

I have read all of these books and they are a splendid "Good Read". For anyone who wants to know what it is like to live in a small town with all the characters that every small town has, I cannot recommend these books enough. I grew up in a small town in the Sierra Nevada's and immediately felt right at home and could recognize my own small town in MitfordFather Tim is inspiring on every level. He makes you laugh, cry, experience love and quiet passion and humility in the face of life's blessings and challenges. Every one of these books is a treat. I have read about 3 books a week for the past 30 years, fiction and non-fiction,  so I am confident that I know a  good read" when I have one in my hands. These are books that you will read and re-read over the years and will want to keep as a staple in your library. They will bring you joy.

A breathe of fresh air. What an enjoyable read. A co-worker recommended the series to me and I was skeptical because I'm not overly religious, but I read a little blurb about it and it sounded like it would be amusing so I bought volumes 1-3. Once I started I couldn't put them down. I had several laugh outloud moments visualizing Father Tim and some of the things he has to deal with. I especially loved his attitude toward learning to work his computer, especially since I'm a computer teacher in an elementary school. Anyway, I am now ordering 4-6 and can't wait until it gets here.
