In These High, Green Hills, Father Tim fulfills Cynthia's conviction that, deep down, he's a man of panache and daring. Yet, no matter where else he places his affection, he's still married to Mitford.

Meet the Author

Jan Karon
Jan Karon

Jan Karon, born Janice Meredith Wilson in the foothills of North Carolina, was named after the title of a popular novel, Janice Meredith.

Jan wrote her first novel at the age of ten. "The manuscript was written on Blue Horse notebook paper, and was, for good reason, kept hidden from my sister. When she found it, she discovered the one curse word I had, with pounding heart, included in someone's speech. For Pete's sake, hadn't Rhett Butler used that very same word and gotten away with it? After my grandmother's exceedingly focused reproof, I've written books without cussin' ever since."

Several years ago, Karon left a successful career in advertising to move to the mountain village of Blowing Rock, North Carolina, and write books. "I stepped out on faith to follow my lifelong dream of being an author," she says. "I made real sacrifices and took big risks. But living, it seems to me, is largely about risk."

Enthusiastic booksellers across the country have introduced readers of all ages to Karon's heartwarming books. At Home in Mitford, Karon's first book in the Mitford series, was nominated for an ABBY by the American Booksellers Association in 1996 and again in 1997. Bookstore owner, Shirley Sprinkle, says, "The Mitford Books have been our all-time fiction bestsellers since we went in business twenty-five years ago. We've sold 10,000 of Jan's books and don't see any end to the Mitford phenomenon."

I'm Always At Home In Mitford.

After having lived for seven years in Lenoir, N.C., just down the mountain from Jan Karon, in Blowing Rock...I can say that I have been to Mitford. With each and every book that I have read in the series I felt like I was back in the hills again. I feel certain that I have met most of the 'extra ordinary' characters in these books. Jan has captured the very soul of a time and place where we all want and sometimes need to go. The hardest part about reading these books......it waiting for the next one. Please never stop writing, Jan Karon.

    I Also Recommend:

Take me home to Mitford it's reunion time.

These stories are the most uplifting, touching, heartwarming, human and realistic tales in which to involve yourself. Jan Karon is a very gifted author whose characters leap off the pages or perhaps the reader leaps into the stories. Get to know Father Tim, Cynthia, Uncle Billy and all the townfolk in Mitford. You will fall in love with the people, the town, the events and want the recipe for the Orange Marmalade Cake that nearly puts Father Tim in a diabetic coma. You will be alternately bowled over by Father Tim's big Buick of a black dog and teased by Cynthia's sugar and spice and all things nice kitty.

While Father Tim is an Anglican priest with his work woven throughout the stories, the tales are not overwhelmingly religious. There are literary quotes throughout which give the reader opportunity to ponder, if so inclined, but pondering is not required. There is something here for everyone romance and love, but nothing tawdry or "x" rated. Lots of feel good moments are offered from Tim's taking in a kid who needs help, caring for the dog which adopts him by nearly knocking him over, visits to the barber shop, the mens store, the grocery, the back booth in the cafe, what to do about the criminal in the church attic, and Tim's own senior citizen-late in life finding his soul mate.

Do yourself a favor. Read the first book in the series ... it won't be long before you're a Jan Karon and Mitford devotee. You'll be hooked like the rest of us and encouraging all your friends to find the joy, the happiness, the promise At Home in Mitford.

    Charming and Fun

These books were shared from a co-worker.They captured me at once and transported me to a place we would all like to live. I can't wait for the continuing series. Fresh, easy read, with loveable characters, and safe for the whole family. The main characters will refresh your faith.

    You can go home

I don't think it's an exageration to say this is an American classic. Karon's simple writing style delivers a homey setting. At Home in Mitford has no plot but merely chronicles the Mayberry RFD-type happenings in a rural community.

    totally refreshing

A breathe of fresh air. What an enjoyable read. A co-worker recommended the series to me and I was skeptical because I'm not overly religious, but I read a little blurb about it and it sounded like it would be amusing so I bought volumes 1-3. Once I started I couldn't put them down. I had several laugh outloud moments visualizing Father Tim and some of the things he has to deal with. I especially loved his attitude toward learning to work his computer, especially since I'm a computer teacher in an elementary school. Anyway, I am now ordering 4-6 and can't wait until it gets here. I absolutely love these books. The narrator also makes each of the characters seem so real. I feel like the Mitford crew are my family and cannot get enough of these books - I am always disappointed when one ends.

Will Put A Smile In Your Heart

Simply put, Jan Karon puts a smile in your heart. Her stories are warm and uplifting, and take you to a place where simple pleasures are enjoyed. Reminds me of writing by Kirk Martin in an incredible new book, Shade of the Maple. Very powerful ending that reinforces the honor of commitment and moves you to hopeful tears! Both authors seem to have an inspirational flair to their writing that is wholesome and uplifting. I always look forward to more from Jan Karon!

    Feels Like Going Home

Jan Karon's books take me back to my small town roots as a pastor's daughter! I love all her characters. They teach us so much by just being who they are. - And they are so real that you feel you know each one!

A Wonderful Escape to an Ideal Place

Reading these books gives you a sense of belonging to a place we all wish existed in our lives. After a few pages, you become a member of the community and feel as if you can actually see the characters. I read all the time, but I don't think I have ever felt the way I do about these four books. EVERYONE should read these books - they will be so happy they did.
