Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
A spiral-bound book with a spillproof cover, The Mix-It-Up Cookbook, illus. by Tracy McGuinness, offers basic recipes for kid-friendly foods, then adds ideas for mix-in variations-among them "apple pie pancakes," "barbecued chicken pizza" or "girlie-swirlie shakes" with a "chocolate monkey" mix-in (including chocolate ice cream, a peanut butter cup and U banana). Brief sections on basic cooking tips and tabletop decorating ideas round out this accessible cookbook. Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
Children's Literature
Clear off the countertop and let's get cooking! "American Girl" provides the reader with a logical approach to cooking; the more you cook, the better you get and once you are comfortable with the basics, you can really have a lot a fun. The book is divided into chapters pertaining to nine different types of food such as eggs, quick breads, tortillas and chocolate. Before the chapters begin, there is an excellent section about getting started; kitchen tools and skills, care of the appliances and other things about the kitchen such as measuring techniques. These six pages alone should be required reading in all cookbooks geared toward children. Each particular food section then presents a basic recipe in clear, simple terms, and lists "mix-ins" that change the taste, texture or appearance of the original recipe. A side bar called "chef's journal" allows young cooks to rate the success of their recipes right there. Ideas for entire meals (including beverages, table settings and centerpieces) are contained near the end. A nice spiral binding (similar to a large tablet of paper) that is sturdy on the exterior makes it easy to open the book to the desired page without having to prop it open with another object. Another attractive feature is that the reader need not be familiar with other American Girl products to enjoy this one. 2003, American Girl/Pleasant Company Publications, Ages 8 up.

    This book is messed up

As a parent, I must say.......this book sure is literal. The Petal Pancakes involve real flower petals and the island macaroni involves leaves and dirt! EW! This book is a waste of money. Forget it's even there.

    Great first cookery book

I gave it to my eight year old granddaughter for Easter and she absolutely loves it. The explanations are excellent and she loves that there is a space on each page for comments. She has already made three recipes and they have all turned out brilliantly. I highly recommend The Mix-it-up Cookbook.
