More than 900 tips that 60 doctors who are also mothers use during their own pregnancies and births, by Rallie McAllister, M.D., MPH and Jennifer Bright Reich. I think the 900 tips speak for themselves, but I love that these guides use real doctors who are also real moms. Dr. McAllister is a syndicated columnist and a mom of three herself, but she also brings other mom doctors into the mix. The book is funny and practical and debunks myths about stretch marks, reveals the truth about morning sickness, insight into the bottle vs. breastfeeding debate, what to know about C-sections and how to deal with a new baby! Who doesn't need that?

This book is packed with great information for new parents. It outlines each week of pregnancy, what is happening in the womb and how MD Mothers handled the many decisions of pregnancy, from where the kids will sleep to how to choose the right doctor to attend your delivery. One thing they include in every chapter that I just love is “Justification for a Celebration.” This section talks about what is going well with your pregnancy and why you should celebrate. In the book I used during my pregnancy, they never really talk about what is going well and encourage celebration. Most of the text is about what isn’t working and what you can or can not do about it. “Justification for a Celebration” is a refreshing segment in each chapter The Mommy MD Guides. The segments are broken up with anecdotes and stories, often humorous, about how the Mommy MD’s handled the different scenarios during their pregnancy from surviving Hurricane Katrina to what it is like to carry twins and everything in between. It’s great for the newly pregnant mom and offers, a fun and enjoyable read to reflect on. This book is filled with fun and useful information for parents who want to know the real deal about pregnancy. I would recommend this book to anyone going through pregnancy for the first time, the last time or if they are growing a big family. You won’t find more helpful information anywhere else.

Pregnancy is an emotional time of questions and decisions. Often we want the best possible advice and ideas and many times we look to our doctor or midwife to supply that. What if we had the collective wisdom and experience of several doctors and midwives? Not just about pregnancy in general, but about their own personal pregnancy experiences. The Mommy MD Guide to Pregnancy and Birth does exactly that. This thick volume of information is organized by week, like so many other pregnancy books, yet all throughout the information and advice is shared through the personal experiences of medical professionals from all areas of practice. I enjoyed reading the personal stories of so many women, with medical backgrounds and training explaining how they handled morning sickness, weight gain, maternity clothes shopping, prenatal visits, and so much more. This is a fabulous resource for any woman who is pregnant or thinking about becoming pregnant. I appreciated the opportunity to review this book and certainly recommend it. ~Kristi Burchfiel, author of applicable Bible studies and devotional
