Overview

We make our own hours, keep our own profits, chart our own way. We have things like gigs, contracts, clients, and assignments. All of us are working toward a dream: doing our own work, on our own time, on our own terms. We have no real boss, no corporate nameplate, no cubicle of our very own. We are the independent workforce. We are freelancers, self-employed entrepreneurs, part-timers, permalancers, temps, consultants, contract workers, and all-around go-getters. Some of us choose to work like this. Some of us have been given no choice in this world of mass layoffs and ever-shrinking benefits.

Ask yourself: Who is planning for your retirement? Who covers your expenses when clients flake out and payments are late? Who is setting money aside for your taxes? Who is responsible for your health insurance?

Take a good look in the mirror: You are.

The Money Book for Freelancers, Part-Timers, and the Self-Employed describes a comprehensive system for earning, spending, saving, and surviving as an independent worker. From interviews with financial experts to anecdotes from real-life freelancers, plus handy charts and graphs to help you visualize key concepts, you'll learn about topics including:

Managing cash flow when the cash isn't flowing your way

Getting real about what you're really earning

Tools for getting out of debt and into financial security

Saving consistently when you earn irregularly

What to do when a client's check doesn't come in

Health Savings Accounts and how to use them

Planning for retirement, taxes, and dreams-all on your own

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
In these tough economic times, many Americans are seeking nontraditional forms of employment, often in the form of freelance work. Freelance writers D'Agnese and Kiernan (coauthors, Signing Their Lives Away: The Fame and Misfortune of the Men Who Signed the Declaration of Independence) address financial planning for such circumstances. The authors describe how one can maximize financial security without compromising success by addressing debts, taxes, emergency funds, and retirement savings using their "Freelance Finance System." They preach commonsense ideas such as accountability and restraint but also describe plenty of clever ways to make one's money go further. They also provide tables for tracking financial information and goals and include lists of helpful financial web sites. The end of each chapter includes a convenient list of portables—concepts that should be emphasized and activities designed to get people closer to their financial goals. VERDICT Developed from the personal experiences of the authors, this book is fun and relevant, with no other recent work quite comparable. Recommended for anyone who is self-employed now or is facing a new work-life situation.—Poppy Johnson-Renvall, Mesalands Community Coll. Lib., Tucumcari, NM

A Road Map To Financial Freedom for Artists

I wish I had had this book when I began my career as a writer. Lucky for me, I got into a Union and had regular contributions made to a pension and health plan. But for any young artist starting out, this is a road map to financial success in a world of sporadic employment and uneven paydays. I intend to give this book to several young graduates this year as they begin the long march towards a successful career in the arts. I recommend it to anyone who is in the arts or any freelance professional. Joseph D'Agnese has arranged a logical, informative and helpful book for those not prone to managing their income. Oh, and it's incredibly entertaining! In fact, it's fun to read. I strongly recommend this for teachers of artists/freelancers, parents of artists/freelancers and artists/freelancers.
