Meet the Author

Matthew Gregory Lewis (1775-1818) was an English novelist and playwright. Born in London to a Jamaican planter father, Lewis studied foreign languages intent on a diplomatic career. In 1791 he produced his first play, a farce that was not well received. His most famous work, THE MONK, was written in just ten weeks and published in 1795, earning Lewis some success. He later became an MP in the House of Commons, and journeyed to the West Indies in 1815 after the death of his father. Lewis died of yellow fever in 1818 on a return trip to England and was buried at sea.

Not what you might expect, this book made a very old idea really come to life. Once you get used to the old english way of speaking, it is a great story and real page turner. The ending is very satisfying. If you want something a little different, try this book.
