Matthew Gregory Lewis (1775-1818) was an English novelist and playwright. Born in London to a Jamaican planter father, Lewis studied foreign languages intent on a diplomatic career. In 1791 he produced his first play, a farce that was not well received. His most famous work, THE MONK, was written in just ten weeks and published in 1795, earning Lewis some success. He later became an MP in the House of Commons, and journeyed to the West Indies in 1815 after the death of his father. Lewis died of yellow fever in 1818 on a return trip to England and was buried at sea.
