Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Leona Illig
Of all the objects in our solar system, the moon is probably the one that fascinates us the most. It is a constant reminder of the dramatic moon landings, and the courageous men and women who planned and executed them. This book covers topics such as the composition of the moon; surface conditions; how the moon affects earth; the future of the moon; and the best ways to view the moon. The organization of the material is outstanding, since the author uses facts to construct a cohesive, entertaining narrative. Astronomy is full of ideas and terms that are likely to be unfamiliar to young readers. The author, however, breaks down complex information into pieces that can be easily understood. In most chapters, a short introductory paragraph, which contains a number of facts about the topic at hand, is presented. Then, the ideas in that paragraph are explained and expanded upon in three or four short paragraphs following the introduction. The book could have benefited from more information on the moon landings (e.g., the names of the astronaut and the spacecraft on page 16 are not identified). Additionally, the theory that the moon was created from the impact of a mars-sized object hitting the earth could have been explained more clearly. There are a few typographical errors (on pages 27 and 28), but such errors are rare for books in this series. The size of the book is ideal: big enough to do justice to the photographs and pictures, but not so large that it is hard for small hands to hold. Charts, graphs, photographs, illustrations, and "Planet Fact" sidebars work together to illustrate the various points. The book, with its list of related websites, a glossary, and an index, will be a valuable addition to any schoolroom, library, or home. Reviewer: Leona Illig
