Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
A favorite song about friendship forms the basis of this tabbed board book in the "Rookie Toddler" series. The opening spread shows a boy and a girl on a teeter totter and not only are they different sexes, they are different ethnicities. As the song progresses, new kids and activities are introduced. An Asian boy joins the original pair on a side. Then they join another friend making bubbles and next you see five kids crawling through a tunnel. The text notes "And my friends are your friends." Onward to a choo-choo ride and all six kids appear on the last page singing and playing. The tip on the final page is located in a white cloud since all of these activities are outdoors. The rhythms and rhymes of language will help pre-reading skills. Clever caregivers can extend the lesson by counting the kids as they are added to each scene, naming games and objects, and suggesting that toddlers give the kids in the book names. I am sure there are even more activities that one could develop. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
