Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
In this thought-provoking sequel to Supermouse, 14-year-old Nicola must decide whether to leave school to study ballet in earnest. Her younger sister Rose has already ``made it'' as an actress. Vain and self-centered, Rose knocks ``ordinary people,'' those not lucky enough to be ``in the business.'' Nicola loves to dance, but she also enjoys ``ordinary'' pursuits like schoolwork, friends and outings with her boyfriend. Encouraged by her bossy mother, Nicola auditions for prestigious Kendra Hall ballet school and is accepted. Now a ``star'' like Rose, Nicola ends up feeling more pain than pleasure. Ure presents an uncompromising portrait of show biz brats and moms. This, plus her understanding of what it takes to be a real artist, will enlighten readers under the impression that looks, a little talent and a lot of press equal artistic expertise and (by extension) happiness. School Library Journal
Gr 6-9 Ure's sequel to Supermouse (Morrow, 1984) will hold a special attraction for balletomanes. A turn of events places Nicola, not her sister Rose, in the spotlight as Mrs. French, Nicola's ballet instructor, recommends that she audition for the famous ballet school Kendra Hall. Her stage-struck mother and Mrs. French have no reservations about which direction Nicola's life should take, but Miss Richardson, the biology teacher, hopes that her prize pupil will aim for college, while Nicola's boyfriend doesn't see any reason for all this fuss over dancing. After the acceptance letter from Kendra Hall arrives, Nicola makes a firm decision about her future which she bravely reveals to Mrs. French. However, the inevitable confrontation with her mother over this decision has been omittedor perhaps just postponed until the next installment. Ure is skillful at creating colorful characters, and her fans will welcome the return of the Bruce sisters. The dialogue between Nicola and her peers in the opening chapters is sometimes jerky and unnatural, but Ure deftly describes important incidents, and her characters execute their roles perfectly. Although the plot is not unique, aspiring young ballerinas will be enthralled with Nicola's chance for ballet fame and the many dance-related details from darning pointe shoes to dieting. Cynthia K. Leibold, Anderson High School, Cincinnati
