Sure, you know almost all these songs: From the girl group joy of the Marvelettes' "Please Mr. Postman" and the Supremes' "Where Did Our Love Go" to the sophisticated soul of the Miracles' "(Come Round Here) I'm the One You Need" and Jimmy Ruffin's "What Becomes of the Brokenhearted" to the gritty R&B of Jr. Walker & the All Stars' "Shotgun" and the Four Tops' "Bernadette," these songs are deeply embedded in our culture, our psyches, and, usually, our personal histories. Barnes & Noble - Steve Klinge
And it's not necessarily a revelation to see gathered in one place -- on this box set's three CDs and bonus rarities disc -- a healthy, if not exhaustive, selection from the incomparable string of hits the Detroit label had through the '60s. But remarkably, The Motown Box succeeds in letting us hear familiar songs with fresh ears, since it's the first anthology solely of stereo mixes, 30 of which are new (by longtime Motown mixer Tom Moulton) and many of which are extended in length from their original versions. On the one hand, the set is a perfect compendium for anyone looking for a basic Motown anthology (or a great party soundtrack!). On the other, listeners who know these songs intimately will relish the chance to hear nearly an extra minute of the Miracles' "Tracks of My Tears" or the alternate lead vocal take of the Temptations' "Since I Lost My Baby" or the extra pop in the mix of Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell's "Ain't No Mountain High Enough." And those collector types will be ecstatic with the material on the fourth disc: stereo mixes of B-sides and rare tracks from stars such as Stevie Wonder, Gladys Knight & the Pips, and the Temptations, as well as less familiar names like the Andantes and Chris Clark. The set proceeds in rough chronological order, starting in 1960 with the Miracles' "Shop Around" and ending in 1968 with Marvin Gaye's "I Heard It Through the Grapevine," stopping short of the Jackson 5 and the more sociopolitical and psychedelic material of Motown's later years -- and leaving us eager for more.
All Music Guide - Rob Theakston
With a plethora of outstanding box sets, anthologies, and budget-line compilations flooding the market from Motown, to pinpoint a definitive collection that is both economically feasible and a thorough introductory primer can be a challenging affair. While this Motown box seems like a four-disc collection most die-hard enthusiasts will have in their collection especially with such a simple, forthright title, Motown Box is actually a quiet treasure in the label's already vast and intimidating modern digital catalog. Unlike many of the other box sets, this is the first to feature stereo mixes exclusively, with a few tracks mixed by the godfather of the remix himself, Tom Moulton. All of the familiar chart-topping anthems that made Motown the soul juggernaut that it is make their appearance here, concentrating predominantly on the label's early years through the late '60s. But what makes this such a captivating collection is the nuances, though subtle, that can be found with close attention and listening. It's a bit like looking at a treasured and long recognized jewel from a different angle under a different light; just the mere repositioning can bring about new quirks that weren't present in mono form. The first three discs are essential Motown 101, but the fourth disc is the one collectors should jump to first. New mixes of rare material from minor but equally important artists like Chris Clark and the woefully underrated Andantes are spread about B-sides from some of the label's larger names. It's a box set that really is a win-win situation for the most casual of fans and die-hard devotees.
