Overview

With more than 700 original medical illustrations of muscles and bones, this valuable atlas is organized by body region, moving from the head to the extremities. For each region, there is an overview of the muscles of the region as a whole, detail of each particular muscle in the region, information on palpation of that muscle, bulleted information on the anatomical relationship of the muscle to other muscles in that region, methodology for learning muscle actions to explain the reasoning behind each action, a section of miscellaneous information about the muscle, and much more. Additional resources are included in ten helpful appendices covering topics like anatomical position and planes of the body, joint actions, reverse actions, actions by groups of movers, kinesiology basics, palpation guidelines, and mnemonics.

• Content is organized by body region, moving from head to extremities.
• Numerous two-color illustrations examine each muscle.
• For each region covered, there is an overview of the muscles of the region as a whole, with large drawings of the muscles of that entire region and information on how muscles in that region function together.
• The layout is compartmentalized for easy understanding and retention for both beginning and advanced students.
• More than 100 pages of appendices provide readers with extensive information on Anatomical Position and Planes of the Body, Joint Actions, Reverse Actions, Muscle Actions by Groups of Movers, Soft Tissue Attachments, Other Skeletal Muscles of the Body, Palpation Guidelines, Kinesiology, Overview of Innervation, Overview of Arterial Supply, Mnemonics, and Terminology.
• A Methodology section for each muscle helps explain content so readers don't have to memorize.

    A favorite!

This is one of my favorite books! While writing my own book, I used The Muscular System Manual as my main reference for the musculoskeletal system. It provided all the illustrations and information I needed and much more. As a massage therapist and Feldenkrais practitioner, I refer to this book often, helping to educate my clients. They love the detailed illustrations and consequently better understand their own body. As an instructor, this book is one of the best I've used and, as an extra bonus, Joe's style of teaching has helped to improve my own teaching of the musculoskeletal system. Thanks Joe! And finally, as a person simple curious about the body, every time I look through this book I learn something new. This manual should be a required text for all students studying the musculoskeletal system and a reference text for all of us in the health-care profession. If I had to leave my house in a hurry, I would definitely grab this book - despite its size!

Well organized and easy to use

What makes this book so excellent, and sets it apart from many of the others I have seen, is that it is not only a well laid out and thorough reference book for advanced users, but a wonderful aid for beginners just learning. The lay out is such that the user can choose how detailed of information s/he wants. For each muscle, the book includes information about origin of the name, attachments (often general and more specific), mover actions, explanation as to why that particular muscle does each action (which is invaluable to learning to understand muscle actions), innervation, arterial supply, methods of palpation for that particular muscle, and a list of miscellaneous fun and interesting facts. Each muscle also has at least two illustrations: by itself on the skeleton, and in relation to other muscles, with an explanation of the latter. With excellent illustrations, an easy-to-reference lay out, and thorough, detailed information, with a touch of humor, this book is a must-have for any student or professional who deals with the human body.

A Must Have Reference For Every Bodyworker

Probably the definitive book on the muscular system. Every muscle in the human body is listed with fabulous illustrations, points of attachment, multiple muscular actions and loads of little know facts. This book should be on the shelf of every massage therapist, physical therapist, chiropractor, osteopath, orthopedist and anyone else dealing with the muscular system. The book is well laid out and easy to follow. It should be a part of the health professional's curriculum.

    Excellent Resource for Musculoskeletal Information

This book is comprehensive in nature, scrupulous in detail, and the product of an obvious passion for the wealth of information to be found in our musculoskeletal system. As a massage therapist and perpetual student of the human body, I am glad to add this book to my library. It is well organized which makes it easy to reference whether I know the muscle, the bony landmark, or the general anatomical area of the body. Having so much information about an individual muscle in one book makes it easy to enhance or refresh my existing knowledge. I have opened the book just to refresh my knowledge of what an individual muscle looks like and found the illustrations clear. I have used the cross reference to find other muscles that might be adding to an existing muscular problem in a client. I have refreshed my awareness of an individual muscle by using the easy to follow palpation information. And I have added to my knowledge of individual muscle actions when helping a client isolate a muscle¿s tightness. Every time I have opened the book I have not been overwhelmed by what I do not know but rather come away feeling smarter.

Review of The Muscular System Manual

As a student of Massage Therapy I have used this book for Anatomy & Physiology and Kinesiology classes and can honestly say it is the best book on the subject of the muscular system I have ever seen. This books strength is that it teaches you how to learn and understand muscles and muscle actions rather than just memorize them. It is very clearly organized and the illustrations are well labeled and easy to understand. There are even 9 appendices covering such things as Anatomical position & planes of the body, palpation guidelines and some fun and useful mnemonics. Dr. Muscolino's book is very comprehensive yet easy to use and I highly recommend it to anyone studying the musculoskeletal system.

    Look No Further...

Finally! A manual that provides an excellent reference for massage therapists, students and instructors! The high quality drawings, as well as Dr. Muscolino's very clear writing style, come together in a text book that is easy to read and understand. As an instructor, it has been a very valuable resource for me when developing my lesson plans. If you are in the market for a very comprehensive reference book on the muscular system, you need not look any further!

    Using more Muscle Power!

For the past 15 years as a licensed massage therapist, I have often needed to use anatomy texts as references for bodywork, especially when working with injuries. The Muscular System Manual best suits my needs as a bodyworker because it contains so much more than just good pictures. An explanation of each muscle, action, and attachments along with informative references and guidelines to help one REMEMBER the information is key to the success of this manual. Each muscle has a palpation section which I have found especially useful in my massage work. The illustrations are clearly drawn and labeled, including the detailed section on 'how to use this book'. This is a working anatomy text for the new student as well as the seasoned bodyworker. It is clear to me that Mr. Muscolino has taken great lengths to sort through many other great sources to create one reference guide that is concise and easy to understand. Well done! (I keep one at work AND one at home!)

The intricacies of the muscular system finally makes sense

I am not only fond of the ease with which you can locate specific muscle groups due to the color coded bleeds which direct you to that section, but once you get there you are given information in a clear and intelligent fashion. It is comprehensive, does not talk down to you and is filled a sense of humor and many tricks to help you to remember important facts. It is clear that Dr. Musculino has a confident hold on the muscular system and human anatomy and physiology in general. As a student in the health care field, this book is a must have. I invite all interested potential buyers to take a chance on this book because you will not regret it. It is well worth it.

If you want you money's worth, buy this book.

This book will be your favorite and only reference book for a long time. It is not just another list of muscles in another order. It is an expanded and all encompassing source of information when it comes to muscles, containing everything a responsible Massage Therapist should know. From location, to attachments, to palpation techniques, syndromes, etc. It will not insult your intelligence. It will guide, invite and encourage you in the process of 'understanding', and that is the best, smartest, and only way to learn.

    Accurate, user-friendly, great pictures

If you work with the body, this is the book on the shelf next to your workspace. It's organized so you can get to the muscle you need quickly; it orients you so you can choose how much detail you want; and the drawings are clear and accurate. It's packed with information. I use it both for myself and to educate clients -- I use my skeleton to show the bones, and then I use Muscolino's book to show the muscle. It's also a good book if you're sketchy on anatomy -- you can get the information you want even if, for example, you can't remember the name of the muscle you're looking for.
