Overview

When British children, Jennifer and Timothy Goodhew visit their grandfather on the isle of St. Mary's, they are surprised to find him missing. In his place they find a wily old pirate captain who has taken control of their grandfather's manor and its servants.

The captain puts the children to work—Timothy in the tumbledown graveyard at the end of the garden, and Jennifer within the manor itself. Naturally, the children are concerned about their missing grandfather and begin to investigate his disappearance.

In the course of their investigations, they discover that the garden surrounding the manor has become wildly overgrown. Furthermore, they are told that entrance to their grandfather's laboratory is strictly forbidden. Undaunted, the children continue their investigations, and in so doing, discover a remarkable secret and a diabolical plot that will change their lives forever.

For ages 11 and up. This story is written in an old-fashioned style.

A very fun read for all ages.

I really enjoyed this book. It is about a family who stumbles into quite an adventure while on Christmas vacation. Lots of fun characters. A book I would recommend and gift when it is available in hardback.

    Loved this book

Siblings Jennifer and Timothy are on their holiday break for Christmas time and, they were going to spend their time at their Grandfather's home, Dr. Plum. However once they arrive they discover that their Grandfather has gone missing and a creepy pirate captain has taken over the home. Captain Crinkley puts the children to work, Jennifer to do cleaning in the house with the maid, and Timothy to dig up skeletons of the Captain's crew. Which these bones that are dug up begin to become alive again. Jennifer uses her time to investigate the house and discovers that her Grandfather who is an inventor built a machine called the Ever After Machine. Instead of telling you what the machine does I will leave you to find out on your own when you read the book.

I loved this book and being that this is a Pubit title at 99 cents it's a bargain as well. I also read Mr.. Scott's other book he has out called Wizard Heights, I reviewed it in an earlier post on this site.

I found this book very enjoyable, although the writing is not terribly sophisticated. The plot was unique and though some characters were not fully developed, it is something I'd recommend. I noticed that all of the "one star", "two star" and even "three star" ratings did not contain any text or comments whatsoever. It is for this reason that I would personally recommend reading only the reviews that explain their ratings. I would recommend this book for people who enjoyed Ian Fleming's Chitty-Chitty Bang-Bang.
