Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Nancy Garhan Attebury
Could a whole island perish below the sea? Believers of Atlantis think so; to them, where it went has been a mystery for over 2,000 years. This well-researched book brings the mystery to a level at which youngsters can understand and marvel. Six short chapters containing concise information are broken into small sections to aid in the ease of reading. Rich photos of a pyramid at Chichen Itza, Mexico, the Azore Islands, the Strait of Gibraltar, and the Atlas Mountains in Morocco are but a few of the many pictures that accompany the text. Highlighted vocabulary words with definitions running along the bottom of each page and sidebars entitled "How Strange" are a few extras that help make the book an especially good read. The book is part of the "Unsolved!" series geared toward middle graders. However, the topics are intriguing enough to capture the attention of older students, too. Teachers may choose to use the book as a supplement to history, social studies, or science lessons. A complete glossary, an index, and a list of resources accompany the main text. Gr 4–6—While Atlantis covers one topic, Ancients introduces four—Easter Island statues, the ruins of Tiahuanaco in the Andes, Egypt's Great Pyramids, and Eldorado, legendary city of South America. Packed with information, each skinny book is busy with large type; colorful, well-captioned illustrations and photographs; and "How Strange…" side boxes. While not always "strange," they are interesting. The writing is clear enough, but the proper nouns, especially in Ancients, will be hard to pronounce: "Roggeveen," "Khufu," "Drbal," and so on. Pronunciation guides would have been helpful. Bold words are defined along the bottom of every page. This is the weakest part of the texts. While "Poseidon," "solar year," and "gilded" are handily defined, there is no reason to define such terms as "mayor" or "dinosaur" to this audience. These words are then duplicated in glossaries. Despite these few small concerns, these are worthy titles. Fascinating fare for research and browsing.—Anne Chapman Callaghan, Racine Public Library, WI
