Overview

No other piece of cloth in history from anywhere in the world has been so studied, examined, and debated as the Shroud of Turin. Nor has any cloth so caught the fascination and reverence of the world. And still it remains a mystery. Is the Shroud of Turin the ancient burial cloth of Jesus Christ or a clever medieval hoax on the part of Leonardo da Vinci? What did the recent Carbon-14 tests prove or disprove? How may the Holy Shroud and the Holy Grail be related? What did the DNA tests show regarding the apparent blood stains on the Shroud? How were the mysterious images on the Shroud created? These are just a few of the many intriguing questions that John C. Iannone addresses in this thoroughly researched study. This remarkable book reads like a mystery novel or detective story that includes emperors and kings, crusaders and knights, warrior monks, the Great Fire of 1532 and much more. The Mystery of the Shroud of Turin will intrigue you and increase your sense of awe and wonder as you contemplate its message.

Editorial Reviews

"A very readable, up-to-date and concise resume of the history and mystery of the Shroud. Well-documented, footnoted and produced, it belongs in the upper echelon of recent books on the Shroud" --Rex Morgan, Editor Shroud News

"What a wonderful summary of Shroud research over the years!" --Paul C. Maloney, Director Ancient Near Eastern Researches

"John Iannone has done a great work in this book. The Shroud is a silent witness to the truth, and Jesus is the Truth. Our Dominican cloistered nuns here at Summit venerate a three hundred-year-old true copy of the Shroud. Pilgrims may view the image by scheduling an appointment with the nuns in advance. I would hope that many would procure this book on the Shroud, and realize as they read it: "Greater love than this no man has that a man lay down his life for his friends." --Fr. Matthew V. Reilly, O.P., Dominican Monastery, Summit, NJ in Homiletic and Pastoral Review, July 1999

"Mother Angelica asked that I write on her behalf to let you know how much she appreciates receiving a copy of your book, The Mystery of the Shroud: New Scientific Evidence. She has a great appreciation for the Shroud as she quite often meditates on Our Lord's Passion. Mother says it is good that we imagine the terrible cruelties He must have endured for us, for it is truly a sign of the great love He has for each of us." --Chris Harrington , Senior Producer "Mother Angelica Live" EWTN Global Catholic Network, June 19, 1998

"A lucid and straight-forward book, The Mystery of the Shroud of Turin has 10 chapters, including 'Credibly Discrediting the Carbon-14 Test on the Shroud,' plus Chronology, Appendix, full notes, bibliography and name and subject indices. Of note: the author's narrative technique asks only that the reader keep an open mind and form his or her own conclusions. Unique feature: Photo illustrations (color and black and white) along with charts, line drawings and maps." -- Crux of the News, June 1, 1998

"This book reads like a mystery novel or detective story with a broad cast of characters and amazing incidents. Iannone's style is simple and easily read and understood. He builds, chapter by chapter, a very convincing argument based on the extensive use of archaeology, history, science and technology. Though it is good easy reading it is a scholarly work which includes endnotes, bibliographies, and an index. Excellent color photographs also enhance the text. Recommended. --Arnold Rzepecki in Catholic Library World, December 1998

"What a good looking book! A swift perusal makes me think this may be the most useful book for people to have. I am going to read it carefully to see if my first impression will be confirmed. Congratulations!" --Walter M. Abbott, S.J. , April 11, 1998
