School Library Journal - School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 2 A hat on the barn floor causes an imaginative young girl to begin to suspect that someone, perhaps a hobo or an escaped convict, is hiding there. Although she is frightened, she does not report her suspicions to her parents until after several attempts to meet the stranger. In view of today's concerns, this element of the story is disturbing. The illustrations provide clues to the stranger's identity: the title page shows the girl's dog running with the hat, that a passing motorist lost; the indentations in the hay were made by the barn cats; etc. The final illustrations show a dragon entering the barn while the girl sleeps; these may confuse some children, who will want to know whether the dragon is real or just in her dream. Although the muted watercolor illustrations have some charm, the story has little. Jeanette Larson, Mesquite Public Library, Tex.
