Trixie Belden and her brothers, Brian and Mart, and their friends, Honey, Jim, and Di travel to Cobbett's Island for a peaceful vacation in this title, Book 13 in the Trixie Belden series. But the Bob Whites' vacation turns into a week full of excitement and suspense. They save the neighbor's caretaker when he falls and breaks his leg, they meet a boy named Peter who teaches them how to sail, they go to their first clambake, and they help Peter's mother raise money for the new library building with her tea party. But when they accidentally discover a letter written by a man who has been dead for many years, the Bob Whites realize there is a mystery here. The deceased sailor, Ed, has left $1000 to Mr. Connor, his friend, and has left him a chart for the treasure hunt. When they discover that Mr. Connor is also dead, the Bob Whites begin searching for the missing chart. Instead they find a chart that is full of confusing landmarks. When they find the money at last, they get more than they bargained for—a young boy who is holding a gun. But a happy ending ensues; they discover that Ed had a wife and son. The wife owns a successful bakery, and the son, who is studying to be a doctor, needs the money to finish his education.
