Overview

The town of Stillwater has a very unwelcome resident.

The town of Stillwater has been dying-the long and painful death of a town ravaged by floods and haunted by the ghosts of all who had lived there. Yet this most recent flood has brought something with it-a creature that nests among the good folks of Stillwater...and feeds off them. The children who haven't disappeared whisper the same word-"vampire". But they're wrong. What has come to Stillwater is something much more horrific.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
"Floating Staircase deserves to stand alongside a Stephen King or a Dean Koontz—at their best."
New York Journal of Books

“Malfi’s use of language and his power of description are sublime.”
—Norman L. Rubenstein, Fear Zone

“Eerie, unpredictable, and exciting. Malfi's lyrical prose and sensitive approach only heighten his tale's emotional impact.”
—Publishers Weekly on Floating Staircase

Publishers Weekly
Malfi (The Floating Staircase) brings a cinematic vividness to this story of a dying small town whose fate manifests as a nightmare of supernatural horror. Stillwater, Md., is in the final throes of its decline as an industrial town when it is plagued by a series of weird incidents: hordes of bats start appearing, several young boys go missing, and townsfolk begin seeing phantoms from their pasts. As police officer Ben Journell investigates, a pattern emerges that suggests something malignant is preying on the public and personal miseries of Stillwater and its citizens. Cross-cutting among the increasingly bizarre experiences of several principal characters, Malfi constructs a panoramic narrative in which the despair of individuals sharpens the sense of horror overwhelming the town. This smartly written novel succeeds as both an allegory of smalltown life and a tale of visceral horror. (Sept.)

loved this book and would recommend it to anyone who wants to read it...the only fall back was how they number it on the nook...it was like skip numbers...but it was awsome and i am willing to lend books to people if they are good thanks

In this cleverly and tautly written horror novel, Ronald Malfi layers in plenty of tension, fear, and mounting horror as the citizens of rural Stillwater are beset by a series of bizarre animal and livestock mutilations. Then a town boy goes missing...and the true terror begins. As police officer Ben Journell tries to solve these horrid mysteries, some start rumors of a vampire. But the true nature of the ravenous evil afflicting Stillwater is much worse than anyone could imagine. I've read one other Malfi horror novel, SNOW, and it was outstanding. So was THE NARROWS. Highly recommended!
