Overview

It takes guts for a new vocalist to dig into some of the high-water marks of the Great American Songbook, as Nicole Henry, a local favorite on the Florida music scene, does on her debut album, The Nearness of You. Considering the success of the project, it's a good thing she had the courage. Henry seems to have a natural affinity for standards, approaching such gems as "Somewhere over the Rainbow," "Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man of Mine," and "You're Looking at Me" with zest and taste. To vary the fare, Henry also applies her talents to more contemporary fare, including John Lennon's "Imagine" and Brenda Russell's "Get Here." In all, a more than promising introduction to a singer worth keeping an eye on.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Scott Yanow
Nicole Henry is a young singer whose soulful sound (sometimes going a little over the top) and background finds her blurring the boundary lines between jazz and R&B. For this set, she is backed by a little-known but talented trio led by pianist Mike Orta. She performs ten standards and two of her originals, with "Get Here" being particularly memorable. Some of the tunes did not need to be revived once again (such as "Summertime," "That Old Black Magic," and "Over the Rainbow"), since they have already been performed an excessive amount of times, but in general the singer comes up with something fresh to say on each song. Nicole Henry, whose voice is pleasing and passionate, displays strong potential for the future.

Love the cd - her voice is amazing, but some of the songs (Cheek to Cheek, Somewhere Over the Rainbow) have been done so many times that you just don't care. That being said, though, her voice is incredibly rich and smooth, and I loved her renditions of Summertime and Get Here, with Can't Help Lovin Dat Man of Mine being another favorite.
