Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
This completely revised and expanded edition of the Arthurian Encyclopedia ( LJ 8/86) is very impressive. Covering ``Arthurians of all periods,'' its entries range from the earliest written chronicles to contemporary fiction. The format has been changed from full-page text to double columns; the illustrations, almost double the number from the first edition, have been carefully chosen and placed to augment entries and please the eye. The excellent selected bibliography has been expanded and updated to 1990 publications. Most significant are the additional entries about 20th-century Arthurian writers and poets. These make the new edition much more useful for research on contemporary adaptations of the legend. Cross references, previously in the body of the work, are now included in a single index, providing more integrated access. Of interest to general readers and long-awaited by specialists, this is highly recommended for academic and public libraries.-- Pamela A. Grudzien, Central Michigan Univ. Lib., Mt. Pleasant
Booknews
Nearly twice as many entries and illustrations, substantial updating and expansion of topics, and oversized, two-column format distinguish the new edition from the first in 1986. Most of the entries cite artists and describe their interpretations of Arthurian themes in literature or visual form; others note locations, characters, and other topics. Long articles trace the Arthurian literature in various languages. Includes a map and a chronology of literature and historical studies. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
