Overview

This book marks the first anatomically exact and complete, three-dimensional, computer-generated reconstruction of actual human anatomy. These amazing images started with the process of digitizing thousands of cross sections of a human body in the National Library of Medicine's Visible Human Project(TM). Years of painstaking tracing and identification of the hundreds of elements revealed in each micro-section were combined with innovative computer-modeling techniques. This process comes closest to achieving the ideal of anatomical representation—which is to recreate visually the exact forms of the body and all its parts.

The images in this book have been drawn from the dataset produced by the Visible Human Project(TM), abstracting them from the computer, rendering them on screen, then reproducing them on paper. The fundamental innovation here is that the original versions of the images represented in this book are three-dimensional ... therefore, these images permit something that has never been done before in print: producing images with incredible detail and accuracy.

    Not enough detail

If you are looking for some level of detail in an anatomy book, this book is not for you. I think its a great book for junior high school students but if you are a medical student, grad student or physician who needs some level of detail for any organ system, this book will not suffice. Gray's anatomy can't be beat. Since the book is cheap, you may want to keep it for the novel 3D imaged pictures but don't count on it for any useful information other than very basic and brief anatomical descriptions that you probably learned in high school.

    Great reference!!!

I am a high school sophomore and I am taking an advanced biology class. My teacher is always searching for a reference with pictures to relate with what her lesson plan calls for each day. this is the one book that I have seen that does this. I reccomend it to anyone questioning their purchase.

Very Precise Book, Info is derived from VHP

I recieved this book as a gift. This book is great because it contains the pictures derived from The Visible Human Project¿ which recreated the human body in the computer exactly as it is in real, so everything you see in this book are real organs with only difference that their surfaces have computer generated colors in order to make the organs more visible. In addition to wonderful pictures the book also contains detailed information on systemic anatomy (10 systems) and regional anatomy of human body. All in all this is great book, the first in its type.

    Wicked Cool Book

This Book rocks. I am a High School Art major and use this everyday; the digital imagery is extremly detailed and the information about the Visible Human Project is very interesting. I definitly recommend this to anybody, because its an inexpensive yet informative atlas of the human body. Plus, I love the CD! It has neat movies on it...

    incompatiblity?

The renderings are quite illuminating; however, there is no literature within the context stating the compatibility or capabilities of the CD-ROM that is included with the book. It would have been nice to know (before the purchase) as to whether or not my platform, OS, or CD drive-speed would make this a treat or just another drink coaster. Lastly, what is on the CD? I chose not to buy the book, considering the interactivity of the CD is what I was interested in. As an artist, I constantly search for reference material. Another anatomy book is not what I need. An interactive CD-ROM with real-time 3D of the human body would be worth the purchase (the book being the side item).

    Mengele at Work

Beautiful pictures, an evocative tour, but most images come from the digitization of the body of an executed inmate who cannot be said to have provided 'informed consent' in any meaningful way. The spirit of Joseph Mengele haunts this work.

    Outstanding Book on Human Anatomy

The Book is one of its best of its kind. 3demensional images in every page in the book, its like Encarta but with pages. it even comes with a CD-ROM with 3D Video Clips of inside the Human Body.
