Overview

Greed. Corruption. Murder. New York in 1880 is a hell of a place to make your living.

Nellie Bly arrives at age 24 in Manhattan, lacking connections and money, but blessed with an abundance of courage and a skill for reportage. Within ten months she lands two front-page stories on the country’s most widely-read newspaper, Joseph Pulitzer’s NEW YORK WORLD.

The pugnacious and voluble Pulitzer is so impressed that he assigns her to get to the bottom of a murder that has confounded the police—the untimely death of his friend Emma Lazarus, the controversial poet and activist. Her investigation leads to tense encounters with some of the most powerful and ruthless men of the time, in an era where elected officials are bought and sold, and where greed runs rampant on an unregulated Wall Street. Outgunned and ignoring her contemptuous all-male colleagues, Bly has only two real allies: a doctor who uses scientific techniques to establish criminal behavior, and a theater critic with unlimited access to underground New York. As the pieces fall into place, Bly uncovers layer after layer of corruption, getting closer to a dangerous core—and to the truth.

Talk about a page-turner! This novel is a tour de force—a thriller full of unforgettable characters and surprising twists and turns, made all the more powerful by the author's scrupulous adherence to historical accuracy. If you enjoy murder mysteries, history, or just a great story, skillfully told, this should be the next book you read.

    So so.

It is readable. But I didn't find it much of a page turner. The dialogue is smooth, but the people all sound the same except when there are attempts at dialect or accents. And, even then, the accents don't give the characters distinctive voices. I found the plot pretty conventional and Nelly's relationships poorly developed. The data about the period is accurate. The psychology of the characters and the sense for how people of the time thought is more limited. Worth a couple of bucks to read. No more.

The more I read, the less I could put it down! The female characters were alive with purpose and individuality. I am so tired of hearing about the prudish Victorians that is was a relief to see women portrayed as some truly were - complex, sensual and ambitious beings who use all their assets to their advantage. The author kept me guessing and characters surprised me throughout. Forget predictable here. The historical research Goldberg incorporated was fascinating and sent me to Wikipedia (more than twice) to find out more. I can see Goldberg's Nellie on the big screen one day. Hope there's a sequel.

    Who murdered Emma Lazarus???

This was a great book for readers of historical fiction! It was a page turner. Nellie Bly, a real person, investigates the death of Emma Lazarus, the author of "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to be free....". Nellie gets to meet many famous people of the day such as Jay Gould and Harriet Beecher Stowe and gets clues from them to help her investigation. There is even a love story in it.

I would highly recommend reading it!! It made me look up more information on Nellie Bly and Emma Lazarus and learning more about Nellie helped me answer a question on Jeopardy!
