The inspiration for this delightful collection of cross stitch designs is firmly rooted in the age-old tradition of sampler making -- a time-honoured style given a modern twist by expert designer, Helen Philipps.
Helen creates her beautiful samplers by drawing on the visual strength and appearance of historic samplers -- their alphabets and verses, motifs and borders -- but she also moves with the times to produce a fresh, contemporary feel, whilst exploring new trends. Richly decorative possibilities in embroidery are now more diverse than ever, with the availability of almost every shade of thread, exciting fabrics and stunning embellishments, like the quirky porcelain buttons and charms which Helen uses so imaginatively.
Four of the twenty-three sampler designs offer refreshing interpretations of the sixteenth- and seventeenth-century spot samplers. Each of these four samplers introduces a seasonal selection of enchanting designs to keep today's embroiderer stitching happily throughout the year. There are also samplers which celebrate the special occasions of life, such as birth, weddings, anniversaries and Christmas.
The range of samplers is complemented by a wonderful array of smaller projects such as gift tags, trinket boxes, sachets, cards, Christmas decorations, pincushions and mini pictures, which are based on specific motifs within the main samplers.
The embroidered samplers and smaller stitched projects are accompanied by clear instructions and colour charts. There is a section on planning a sampler and adapting ideas and also a useful motif library. Shown in glorious colour photographs, these charming and original designs are sure to inspire the creative, contemporary stitcher.
