The New Professor's Handbook
After I received my Ph.D. in 2007 I began writing a series of advice books for undergraduates, graduate students and teaching professionals. The first, "25 tips for the Budding Ph.D.", dealt with what type of mindset you need to thrive in a doctoral program. I also provided a number of strategies and tactics a person could use to optimize their experience.
I then wrote, "The Teaching Assistant’s Bible: A Guide for Graduate Students, Adjuncts and College Instructors." I know that many graduate students do not receive proper, if any, training before they are thrown into the lion’s den of the college and university classroom and without proper guidance it could be a terrible experience.
The "New Professor's Handbook" is for aspiring and new professors. I wrote this book because I didn’t have anyone share with me what it was like to be a new professor. I didn’t know what to take advantage of, what to look out for and what to avoid at all costs. If I would have had someone be ‘frank’ with me I could have enjoyed the experience a lot more and avoided a lot of pitfalls.
It always helps to have someone give you a friendly ‘heads up’ and this is what this book is.
