YOUR FIRST MASSAGE

A few minutes from now, without opening an anatomy book or enrolling in a class, you can begin to give your partner one of life's most delicious experiences: a full body massage. You won't need to practice strange exercises or develop unused muscles. Think of massage as educated touching. You were born to do massage, to give pleasure with your hands.

Massage works the first time you try it. Even though your technique may not be perfect remember that people love being touched. Simply making unhurried contact with your partner's body initiates a warm, deeply relaxing feeling. This book is about turning that feeling into happiness.

Keep massage simple when you're learning. The pages that follow present dozens of different strokes but you needn't learn them all to give a complete body massage - repetition of a few well executed strokes counts more than variety for its own sake. Each chapter begins with a circulation stroke that spreads sensation over the whole body part you're about to massage. Make sure to do that essential stroke, then add one of the large area kneading movements, usually a full handed variation, that travels easily. After at least three passes over the whole region, focus your kneading wherever you feel tightness and keep at it until you feel the muscles begin to relax - usually, this doesn't take long. After kneading, choose from a variety of proven strokes in each chapter: friction to focus on aches and pains, compression to spread deep sensations and percussion to wake up an unfeeling body. On the limbs, chest and back, end with one of the authoritative full body circulation variations that moves sensation from one part of the body to another. Complete the hands and feet with a brushing movement that will transfer sensation to the end of the fingertips and toes. A massage beginning and ending with strong circulation strokes and containing several minutes of kneading and compression, completes a basic fluid release sequence. Your partner will feel the difference immediately…and for hours afterward.

Pick strokes from part two to create your own full body massage or simply do them all in the order they appear in each chapter. If you choose a basic approach, say, four or five, strokes on each part of the body, repeat each one twenty or thirty times. The more you vary the strokes, the less repetition you will need - generally, ten times for circulation strokes, three for most others.
