Overview

Research confirms that the teacher makes the greatest difference in the learning success of students, so it's important that new teachers get off to a strong start. With help from veteran teacher and mentor Gini Cunningham, inexperienced teachers can better understand and successfully tackle the many daily challenges they will face in the classroom:

*Setting up classroom procedures and managing class time
*Coordinating standards, curriculum, and textbooks
*Developing manageable lesson and unit plans
*Handling discipline problems and engaging students in learning
*Using effective assessment practices and monitoring student achievement

Teaching is a physically and emotionally demanding career, but Cunningham's practical advice and memorable anecdotes will help teachers prepare for and enjoy their work—even on the most difficult days. And administrators can use this accessible guide to support new professionals and avoid early burnout. The New Teacher's Companion is a valuable resource for any teacher who wants the classroom to be a rich and rewarding place for teachers and students alike.

    This book truly is a companion for new teachers

    When Gini Cunningham asked if I would write the Foreword for her book, I was thrilled - and felt a great deal of trepidation. I had read the manuscript and wasn't sure I could write a Foreword that would properly support her brilliant work. I even procrastinated on it! Once, though, I started to write, the ideas flowed because I felt so strongly about this book - and wished I had owned the book when I was a beginning teacher (lo, these many years ago). Here is just a brief excerpt from what I originally wrote:

    Gini Cunningham's book is magical for so many reasons. A few of the ones that you'll discover:

    * Gini tells stories that are so real and comforting that we are pulled right into the text and the experience;
    * The author's passion for teaching is communicated so tenderly yet eloquently that teachers, principals, staff development trainers, and others will know that teaching is the finest profession and is a choice of both the heart and mind;
    * The practicality of the suggestions will pull readers right through the text instead of sending them running, the way too many books do because the `tips' are more like tribulations, which seem impossible to the new teacher.
    * The book is accessible when help is desperately needed on one particular topic. Readers will be able to jump in and find what they are looking for and will immediately have suggestions and support from their mentor-on-the-page.

    I've heard it said that we should have one mentor who is twice our age and one mentor who is half our age. Somehow, with Gini Cunningham, you get both. She has the wisdom that comes only through living and experiencing what life has to offer. She also brings a youth and freshness to her conversations and relationships. I can't say I know anyone else like her and these qualities come through her writing.

    Any of us who have taught have experienced `The First Year' (and that should be read with an ominous, heavy tone). Because of this shared experience, we have reason enough to know that the book by Virginia (Gini) Cunningham is needed and will be a welcome addition to the literature. You will keep learning with each reading of this book and will share it with others who either are, work with, or are getting ready to join the ranks of `new teachers.' Read, learn, and enjoy!

    --------------------
    Folks, my recommendation is that you get this book for yourself - and you get copies for your friends, family, and colleagues who are teachers. If you know someone who is a new teacher, have the book sent overnight shipping!

    I Also Recommend:

    An inspiration for teachers of all experience levels

    I won't start my student-teaching until the Spring semester but after reading this book, I absolutely cannot wait to get into the classroom. It got me so excited to enter the wonderful world of teaching. Although I'm nervous, I now understand that this is a normal feeling and now I have a great resource to help get me through the next few decades. I would recommend this book to both new teachers as well as veteran teachers as both will be able to relate to this witty and creative handbook. It is truly one-of-a-kind.
