A lovely collaboration between James Horner and Hayley Westenra

I have never seen “The New World,” but I purchased the soundtrack after I heard that my favorite singer, Hayley Westenra, worked with James Horner on it. I remembered the haunting score Horner created for "Titanic," and coupled with Hayley’s heavenly voice, I knew that this one couldn’t go wrong. I was not disappointed! This is a magnificent album. Common complaints I have heard regarding this CD are as follows: #1 – it sounds too much like "Titanic," #2 – the music by Wagner & Mozart that was in the movie is omitted here, and #3 – the inclusion of nature sounds is distracting. I disagree with the first. Sure, it does have a distinctive James Horner sound, but the theme is based on Hayley’s the “Listen to the Wind” song instead of Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On.” They are both gorgeous, but different. As for the second complaint, this CD is comprised of the entire original score, but much of it was substituted in the movie by Mozart's Piano Concerto #23 and other classical music. Nothing against those lovely pieces, but the original score deserves to be heard. As to the third, the occasional bird songs are soothing and contribute to the lush, natural sound that this album invokes. I am so grateful for this CD which brings together the talents of a wonderful composer and a gifted singer.

    Enchanting...

I loved every song on this CD. They all convey a sense of peace. The only thing that bothered me was the last song. I'm not so sure Hayley's voice was the best pick for the song. It was too shrill. I was thinking of a richer or a sweeter/more innocent voice. But the song itself is beautiful and wonderfully written!

    PEACEFUL AND POWERFUL!!!!!

I love, love, love this CD. I loved the movie, I thought it was beautifully made and a great, timeless story. I thought the music was just breathtaking so i had to buy the CD. It's amazing!!! Every song tells a story and creates a different mood. It is the perfect type of music to ballet dance to. I even coriagraphed my solo dance to a few of the songs at my recent recital. I would recommend this to any one who loves and appreciates great music!!!

    A heart throbbing Song

As an silent artest and lover of songs I have found Horners melody, words, and song by Haley Westerna, to be the most moving achievement of man/woman kind. It shall live on forever.

    I Also Recommend:

    Beautiful and Deeply Moving

There is something enchanting and timeless about this CD. It perfectly fits a film based on Princess Pocahontas, and the life she lived. The main theme is climatic, moving and somehow awakens deep things in the heart. The addition of nature sounds, which is hit and miss for me, worked well in this CD. Listening to it, you feel awakened, alive and free. I use this CD to write to, and it's very liberating. Horner did a brilliant job on this soundtrack, my best compliments to him on it. The theme of the CD is ethereal, mystical, but somehow still has a dymanic to it that lovers of more gripping CD's I'm sure will appreciate. It's well worth checking out. Get it, you will love it.

Horner's Finest Work to a Genius Film by Terrence Malick

First, Terrence Malick is a genius. The film is utterly gorgeous, real and beautiful. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but I just saw the film tonight and I must admit that any person that cannot appreciate Malick's style and vision of filmmaking really hurts my feelings. Tonight, throughout the entire screening of the film, FIFTEEN people walked out at various times. I've never been in a film where people walk out, unless they are sick. But perhaps these people were sick of "Malick's style" of filmmaking. And I can see people being like this, unfortunately. Isn't it just typical? There will be a lot of misunderstanding this film, sadly. Horner has taken a giant step beyond his typical style of composing in the film, in my opinion and study of his music. Probably because Malick had something to do with the movie. Just as the film is very different from all films made today, so is Horner's score. Subtle as the score is (blended with some excellent classical selections), there is a theme used two or three times in the film that lasts several minutes that owns up to the title. This theme would be more than enough if there were no other tracks on the soundtrack. I'm very proud of the film, the world needs more like it. Go see it, it's a film unlike any other. Keep them coming Malick...and Horner. I'm not a woman, but if I were, I would have to compare this film to giving birth. That's sort of the spiritual thing it leaves you with...a feeling of birth, purity and cleanliness. And don't forget the Oscar for Kilcher.
