Overview

The August 8, 2005, issue of the Weekly Standard called The New York Sun crosswords the best in America, beating out The New York Times in a head-to-head competition. What makes them the greatest? They’re carefully edited so those obscure words that nobody actually uses are out, and solving pleasure is in, thanks to tricky clues and witty puns. Most of the puzzles have clever and original themes that add to the fun. Plus, solvers will enjoy the wide range of difficulty—indicated by the number of stars on top.

"67 puzzles out of 72 in this book do follow the symmetry rule. The ones from Mondays are the easiest, while the Friday puzzles are the toughest. There are 61 standard-size crosswords, eight that are slightly larger at 15x16 boxes, two with skinny 14x15 grids, and one 25x25 monster. There are 5,474 clues and 13,980 white boxes, most of which would remain white if you gave the grid a 180 spin." - Peter Gordon

Peter Gordon is the Crossword Editor of The New York Sun and Executive Editor of Puzzlewright Press. His crosswords have appeared in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post, Newsday, and numerous puzzle magazines, including Games, where he was an editor for seven years. Gordon was a member of the winning US teams at the 1990 International Crossword Marathon in Bjelovar, Yugoslavia, and the 1999 World Puzzle Championship in Budapest, Hungary. In 1994, he represented the US at the Rummikub world championship on a cruise up the Rhine River, and he is the two-time division winner at the American Crossword Puzzle Tournament. His titles include Hall of Fame Crosswords, Match Wits With Mensa: Test Your Trivia Smarts, and Yahtzee Scratch & Play; he is the coauthor of Mensa Guide to Solving Sudoku and Scrabble-doku.
