Overview

The "national pastime" engages (and sometimes enrages) fans and fanatics across America and around the world. Many of The New Yorker's best cartoonists, an esteemed and talented lot, have experienced our passion for this great game. These 100 drawings give hilarious proof of that.An unforgettable, all-star lineup of cartoonists from A (Charles Addams) to Z (Jack Ziegler) are all on deck, making the collection a grand slam! In cartoons spanning eight decades, the artists have captured the emotional essence of the game—kids playing pickup and beleaguered major leaguers; fans at the ballpark or glued to the TV; zealous players to zany managers; and yes, even that necessary evil, the umpires.

Author Biography: Robert Mankoff is a cartoon "player-manager" at The New Yorker, where he is cartoon editor and is also a frequent contributor. He is also founder and president of The Cartoon Bank, and the editor of eight New Yorker cartoon collections, including The New Yorker Book of Golf Cartoons. Michael Crawford, a staff artist at The New Yorker, has been contributing cartoons and illustrations since 1983. He also swears he has a better ERA for the company softball team than "Beanball Bob Mankoff."

The cartoonists at "The New Yorker" once again hit a home run with this funny and insightful look at all aspects of baseball.

Meet the Author

Robert Mankoff is a cartoon “player-manager” at The New Yorker, where he is cartoon editor and a frequent contributor. He is also founder and president of The Cartoon Bank, perhaps making him a “commissioner” of sorts, as well. He is the editor of numerous other cartoon collections, including The New Yorker Book of Golf Cartoons.

Michael Crawford, coeditor of this collection and staff artist at The New Yorker, has been contributing cartoons and illustrations since 1983. A dedicated baseball fan, he swears he has a better ERA for the company softball team than “Beanball Bob Mankoff.”
