Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Dr. Judy Rowen
The author's musings about heaven, or whatever you might call "the next place" that one inhabits after this life, are presented in arcs of text superimposed on tranquil collage illustrations. The overall sense is one of peace. No specific religious allusions are made. However, his statement that "the body I once lived in won't be part of me at all," may cause some Christians discomfort. The book might be reassuring for children facing the loss of someone dear.

    Beautiful book...both words and pictures!

This is a terrific book to give as a gift to a recently bereaved friend. Such simple words and calming, beautiful pictures convey a sense of peace that help them know they are not alone.

    A great support when grieving

This book has been used by my family for several losses and has been extremely useful for all ages. Our kids connect with the rhymes and the beautiful pictures. The adults have connected with the ideas that are so beautifully described. I would highly recommend this book if you or someone you love is grieving.

    Healing, Comforting and Beautiful!

Every time there is a death of a friend or family member, I purchase this book for the grieving individuals. It has brought so much peace. It is heart-warming and full of love.

Recently, I read this treasure to a co-worker, who was dying in the hospital and as a result, he was calm and relaxed. He died peacefully the next day.

I truly believe this belongs on every shelf and in every home!

    The next place

"The next place" was suggested for me to read by a friend who was on her final journey. As she wished i read it and have re-read it several times since. It has become my go to book when i need a lift from missing someone. It has also become my gift to anyone i know who has lost or is losing a loved one. It is beautifully written and illustrated and has a wonderful way of seeing the sadness of loss while at the same time the wonder and beauty of the next place. It brings peace.

    I Also Recommend:

    Comforting Book for All Ages

After my teenage son died, this book was recommended to me by a friend. I found it to be a very comforting book, and it is good to think about my son being in "The Next Place." It is a children's book, but I would recommend it as a wonderful book for all ages (I am in my fifties). I find myself re-reading the book, and I keep it on my coffee table. I have bought copies for friends who are also grieving the loss of loved ones. The illustrations are wonderful and the text is non-denominational. Another book that I recommend for people who are grieving is Tear Soup. It is another children's book that is wonderful for all ages.

    For Peace in troubled times

After hearing this poem at the ceremony of a dear friends passing I couldn't forget it. I always kept it in the back of my mind. When I lost my brother 2 years ago I gave it to my mother, who found the strength to read it at his celebration of life. Mr. Warren's words of the "Next Place" gave me and my family peace.

    OUTSTANDING BOOK

Even though this book was written to help a child understand death, it is a TREMENDOUS book for adults as well. When my adult nephew passes away recently, this book was read at his funeral. It helped so many of us with the sadness and questioning 'why' feelings. Each of us came away with a feeling of hope and joy. I have given this book to friends who have recently experienced the loss of a loved one and to friends who are currently facing life threatening illnesses. In ALL cases, the recipient has said how much this book has helped them through the 'rough' times. I HIGHLY recommend this book for a personal library, as well as gifts to others.

    more from this reviewer

A gift for persons who had a loved one pass away

It is a beautiful presentation of death in a non-denominational manner. The flowing art and graceful language lends itself to spirituality. I've had friends come back to me after reading it to say that it touched them and helped in only the small ways that friendly gestures can when a loved one has passed away.

    Phenomenal

This book was discovered by my mother some years ago when is was being talked about on a TV show. When a friend had a loved one who passed away, I bought it in leiu of a card. It was greatly appreciated by the recipient for it's message along with it's artwork.
It is intended for children, I believe, but I have given it to adults at least 5 times when a loved one has been lost, and will continue to do so.
The illustrations are incredible, but the message is one of joy, hope, & love.
I recommend it to anyone trying to explain to a child as to where a deceased love one has gone, & to any adult trying to send a heartfelt message to someone in need during a very trying time.

HELPING TO EXPLAIN ABOUT A LOVED ONE'S PASSING

A GREAT BOOK TO START A DIALOG WITH CHILDREN OVER THE LOSS OF A LOVED ONE, WITHOUT SHOVING RELIGION DOWN THEIR FACE. VERY GOOD SPIRITUAL BOOK THAT I LEARNED ABOUT WHILE VOLUNTEERING WITH HOSPICE. A MUST OWN AND READ FOR THOSE WHO HAVE EXPERIENCED LOSS AND NEED TO EXPLAIN IT TO AN INFANT OR YOUNG FAMILY MEMBER. ILLUSTRATED BEAUTIFULLY. A GREAT FIND AND READ. HIGHLY ENDURSED FOR ALL AGES.

I think it helped both of us...

I bought this book for my then 2 1/2 year old daughter, after we lost my grandmother and my father with in one week of each other, their deaths were unrelated and hit my family very hard. My daughter was very close to my father she started to ask me questions I couldn't not answer in a way she could understand. I read this book to her and she loved it. The wonderful illistrations really gave her some idea of what "heaven" is and where her Paw-Paw and Sweet Granny had gone. She is now 4 1/2 and we still read it nightly after her prayers. She knows most of the words and will say the poem along with me as I read it. I can just now, read it with out crying or tearing up. I think it has helped both of us.

    The Next Place

What an awesome book! When my father passed away a couple of years ago, I looked for something like this to read to my children, to help them deal with their grief and worry about where grandpa went. This is a beautiful, comforting look at where we go after death. Perfect for children or adults who are grieving the loss of someone special and who need to know that their loved one is okay, safe, and happy. The choice of words and visual presentation complement each other to create peaceful thoughts and images for the reader.

    The Next Place

I was first given this book in 2000, after having a lengthy discussion with friends, regarding our vision of the next place. My girlfriends found this book, the next day and purchased it for me because my feelings about the here-after were so similar to Warren Hansen's. I have shared this book with many. And I have purchased several copies of this book for friends & loved ones upon the passing of their loved ones. This book is so hopeful and uplifting. I believe that young and old, alike, are able to relate to "The Next Place" and find comfort is it's message. I highly recommend this book and am certain that I will be purchasing more copies in the future.

A great gift for someone grieving.

I heard this book read for the first time 8.5 years ago at a funeral. And ever since I have bought it for every friend in my life that has lost a loved one, young and old. It is very beautifully written. It will bring both tears and peace to anyone that is experiencing a loss. I recommend to everyone that is wanting to give something but not sure what at a time that is difficult for anyone. This book can be read over and over when they need comfort and understanding.

    Wonderful expression!

This book was read to my children and I by a Hospice counselor a couple months after their father passed. It was a wonderful expression of where your loved one goes after leaving this earth. It was especially touching with the graphics, and really left things open for people of all beliefs. It's truly something I would recommend to anyone who has lost a loved one, even adults, because of it's simplicity.

    A Terrific Book

I am a teacher and sent this book home with students to read with their family when they had lost someone. It is such a comforting and peaceful book. I can't explain it but it really does reach all ages. The first couple of times I read it, I cried.
