Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Denys Cazet's moovelous bovine duo make hay on Halloween in the I Can Read book Minnie and Moo: The Night of the Living Bed. The fun begins when Minnie dreams that a giant mouse has eaten the last bit of chocolate left in the world, and continues as she, Moo and their barnyard friends master the ins and outs of trick-or-treating. Children's Literature
These two crazy bovines are at it again and as usual the book is full of crazy shenanigans and a host of amusing characters and situations. It is Halloween night and Minnie is having a nightmare. She dreams that a giant mouse has eaten the last piece of chocolate in the whole world and not only that he ate the last cream puff. She wakes up Moo who is asleep beside her in a bed under a tree (don't ask) and then the adventure begins. The bed rolls down a hill and as it races through the barn it picks up passengers. When they all finally come to an abrupt halt—their friends try to console Minnie. But remember this is Halloween, and these cows are no fools, they spot the trick or treaters and figure they can give it a try. They are wildly successful and collect plenty of chocolate treats, but watch out for that giant mouse who suddenly makes an appearance and the little old lady who mistakes the bed for a bus. It is all good fun and kids will laugh as much as adults who may happen to pick up this book to read it on their own. "An I Can Read Book" for those reading independently. 2003, HarperCollins, Ages 4 to 8.

PreS-Gr 3-Minnie and Moo return in another adventure, this one involving a runaway bed, their friends from the farm, Halloween trick-or-treating, and a truly horrible nightmare where a giant mouse eats the last bit of chocolate in the whole world. After a harrowing ride into town on the runaway bed, Minnie's friends declare the cure for chasing away bad dreams is treats, preferably chocolate treats. Watching trick-or-treaters collect their goodies just down the street, Moo recognizes a way to get them all some chocolate treats to chase away any more bad dreams. Readers will chuckle as the animals attempt to trick their way to bags full of candy. An adult in mouse costume reminds Minnie of her nightmare and scares her into action. The bed gets pushed back home to lie under the old oak tree at the farm, where they all take a well-deserved snooze. Narrator Barbara Caruso's expressive voice will keep readers engaged. Background noises such as the squeaky bedsprings and ringing doorbells enhance the text. This level 3 I Can Read Book will satisfy beginning readers.-Judy Czarnecki, Chippewa River District Library, Mt. Pleasant, MI Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
Cazet releases the breaks in this latest installment of early-reading tomfoolery. It's Halloween and Minnie the cow is having a bad dream: A giant mouse is eating the last piece of chocolate in the world. She tosses and turns and starts hammering on Moo, the bull with whom she shares the bed, a bed that starts rolling down the hill from its perch under a meadow tree, gathering farm animals as it speeds through the barnyard, and coming to rest in town. To soothe Minnie's chocolate angst, the animals go door to door, performing tricks to get treats, until Minnie corners enough chocolate to rest assured. There are good and loopy side events throughout the story and Cazet keeps the language droll and dry. When the sheep accidentally get wet, a woman tries to identify the crew at her Halloween door: "Don't tell me!" she said. "I know! Sponges! Four cows, a pig, and two walking sponges! You children are so clever." Clever and hilarious. (Easy reader. 4-8)

Meet the Author

Denys Cazet is the author and illustrator of more than 25 picture books for children, including Never Spit On Your Shoes, winner of the California Young Readers Medal.

The books about Minnie and Moo are his first for beginning readers. He was inspired to tell stories about the silly cow best-friends when he passed a herd of cows in which all but two were facing the same way. The other two stood next to each other, facing in the opposite direction from the rest of the cows. He immediately dubbed the two nonconformists Minnie and Moo and imagined the adventures two cows who were loyal friends rather than followers of the herd. Mr. Cazet is currently writing I Can Read Books featuring Elvis the Rooster from the farm on which Minnie and Moo live.

Mr. Cazet was an elementary school teacher for 25 years, and has also been a school librarian and elementary school media specialist. He remains active in his local elementary school parent and advisory committees. A California native, Mr. Cazet lives with his family in the foothills of the Napa Valley.
