Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
Good atmospheric writing and realistic portrayals of island life on the Outer Banks of North Carolina are the highlights of this mystery, which attemptsand nearly succeedsto merge larger environmental issues with the inner life of a child. Fires have been burning the local fishing shacks nightly, perhaps as part of a protest of the government's attempts to destroy a local way of life, or perhaps set by the spirit of the ``nightwalker,'' subject of an old Indian legend. Savannah, 12, tries not to believe in such things, but she can't help thinking that her sleepwalking little brother Poco is involved in setting the fires when he goes out at night. Family tensions are sharply drawn as Savannah becomes friends with one of the summer people, the same people who are leading the crusade to turn the Outer Banks into a recreational area. When danger strikes, Savannah discovers that sheand not Pocois the sleepwalker. An intriguing, sometimes exciting story is occasionally marred by the confusion of Savannah's narration of her sleepwalking episodes (even while she is unaware of them). And without a resolution of the larger issue of fishing vs. recreational rights, the story loses its impact. Ages 9-12. (Oct.)
School Library Journal
Gr 5-7 Like their Indian and English ancestors before them, the inhabitants of Breach Island, in North Carolina's remote Outer Banks, hover on the brink of change, their island traditions threatened by off-island values and off-island ways. Growing up on Breach, 12-year-old Savannah is ambivalent toward the changes. She is proud of her ``new-fangled'' family with their indoor plumbing, Mr. Coffee, and TV, but resents the new bridge linking her home to the mainland and the Park Service bringing tourists to nearby Shackelford Banks. Compounding the uneasiness of the situation are the mysterious nighttime burnings of Shackelford fishing shacks. Savannah's father, descended from Shackelford's original Indian inhabitants, suggests that the Nightwalker might be to blame. But just who is this Nightwalker: a sleepwalking Indian spirit, Savannah's sleepwalking younger brother, or the ``shadowy'' side in all of us? Hurmence's characters are distinct and engaging, right down to their folklore and their Elizabethan dialect. The setting is intriguing and so sharply defined that even readers will resent the changes that progress is likely to bring. Unfortunately, the plot is less successful. The pacing is jumpy and difficult to follow, and the Nightwalker is too shadowy and indistinct to pull it all together. Readers will find this less a ghost story than it promises to be, and, for that and its lack of focus, somewhat disappointing. But those looking for a reasonably diverting mystery and a finely drawn regional portrait will find The Nightwalker all they could want. Marcia Hupp, The Ferguson Library, Stamford, Conn.
