Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 3-6-Information is provided about the location, geological history, plants and animals, indigenous peoples, and environmental threats for each of these natural wonders. The authors also give a bit of background about Western explorers who came to the regions and explain where similar natural features are located elsewhere in the world. Although this is an ambitious agenda for such slim books, the coverage is adequate for most topics. Photographs, mainly in color, appear on every spread. The use of maps is particularly effective. For example, Nile includes both a one-page map identifying all the countries through which the Nile passes and a full spread showing the major rivers on each continent. The true/false, short answer, and multiple choice quizzes plant all four titles firmly in the "report resource" mode. The "Skill Matching Page" lends additional evidence that the books have been designed to meet specific learning objectives. Yet, the texts flow smoothly enough to hold the attention of general readers. Angel Falls, in particular, introduces a part of the world not covered in many books for this age group although its designation of India as a continent is puzzling. Purchase these titles as needed to supplement curriculum areas.-Kathy Piehl, Minnesota State University, Mankato Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
