The Barnes & Noble Review
Anyone can buy web design software. But designing professional, attractive, effective web pages? That’s another story. If you’re not a professional designer, get the help you need: get Robin Williams’s The Non-Designer’s Web Book, Third Edition.

Nearly 200,000 non-designers have bought previous editions. The Web’s a better place for it. Think of all those sites that that reflect proven design principles; sites with easy-to-understand navigation; sites that use color, images, and type well, without ever being garish. Think of all the sites that have been tested and fixed to actually work right.

But the last edition came out years ago. Thankfully, Williams and John Tollett have thoroughly updated their book for the latest technologies, standards, approaches. If you need to get contemporary, pro-quality results, without becoming a pro (or hiring one), this is the book you want. Bill Camarda, from the October 2005 Read Only

This is one of three books I bought when working on a new and significantly more complex design for my personal company website. I liked this one for it's discussion of colors, layout, work with graphics, and also for some step by step instructions on how to use photoshop to make graphics display better.
