Don't be misled by the title of this short book: A Non-Geeks Guide to Comic-Con. We're not anti-geek. We love Comic-Con, so there's probably a large dose of geekiness in us. But what we want to do here is create a pocket guide that cuts through the hype and excess to give you the information you need to make your visit to Comic-Con a success.

In other words, this guide helps you get the most from your Comic-Con experience. We begin with a brief history of the event. It's been running for more than 40 years now in San Diego, and is a significant melting pot for just about every aspect of pop culture.

We then move on to talk about the all-important acquisition of Comic-Con badges. After this, we explain what you can expect from Comic-Con based on previous years. We don't make clever comments or funny asides: We give you factual details that enable you to plan your visit to Comic-Con and make your time there as enjoyable as possible.

Next we discuss disabled access. Comic-Con has staff devoted to helping those with disability issues.

Around 130,000 visitors now come to San Diego for Comic-Con every July. If you want good quality accommodation, and want to make the travel arrangements that suit you best, you have to plan in advance. We give you the low-down on travel and lodgings in the San Diego area. We also make suggestions about how to get around once you arrive. After all, the last thing you want to do is waste time making your way to San Diego, and then struggle to find somewhere to sleep. Although there are plenty of tales of Comic-Con visitors who spend nights in their cars …

Similarly, we give you hints on where you might like to eat. You can spend all your time at Comic-Con, of course. There are lots of food concessions. But if you want to head away and explore San Diego cuisine, we can help. We also have suggestions for Comic-Con visitors who after a long day still have the energy for the city's nightlife.

Comic-Con, as you know is spread over several days. Many people extend this still further and see something of San Diego while they're in the area. We give you ideas on what you can do. We're not trying to tear you away from the Comic-Con events and talks. We just thought you might like to add a little sightseeing to your visit. After all, San Diego has a lot to offer.

Finally, we wrap up this guide with some helpful tips. These cover a wide range of issues, from the basic to the not so obvious. Our intention is simple: To give you the chance to enjoy Comic-Con in your own way and at your own pace. That's why we call this The Non-Geeks Guide.

So read on. And we hope you enjoy Comic-Con to the fullest.
