Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 5 Up For anyone who's ever dreamed of taking a trip out of this world, here's the book to dream over. In an attractive large format with plenty of full-color photos and diagrams, Maurer traces what's known about the solar system and how people or probes have reached their destinations. To aid the imagination in putting readers on the space shuttle or ``stowing away'' on an unmanned probe, Maurer offers sidelights like how to put on a spacesuit and how the Voyager probes transmit color pictures to Earth. Especially interesting are same-scale photos of Earth's most impressive crater, canyon and volcano, with like features on the Moon and Mars. This is more inviting than Reginald Turnill's Space Age (Warne, 1980), which covers more types of spacecraft. Maurer comes up to the high marks Patricia Lauber's Journey to the Planets (Crown, 1982) set for appeal and clarity. With its lucid text, tibits of unusual information and spectacular photographs, this one's a must for armchair travelers into space. Margaret L. Chatham, formerly at Smithtown Library, N.Y.

    Space

Atlanta, Georgia- It is a darn shame that our shuttle program is over. Now a generation of Americans will be limited on space travel.
Fortunately in The Nova Space Explorer's Guide: Where to Go and What to See by Richard Maurer, this book will serve as a reminder of the imagination and power of space exploration.
The photographs are breath taking and the dialogue is insightful. A beautiful review of our space program and wonders found throughout our solar system.
This primer is perfect for any budding scientist. This also serves as a companion to the PBS television series.
