The Novena Book: The Power of Prayer

Overview

Today's spirituality movement stresses the holistic value and the power of prayer. But one special, long-established form of intention and affirmation has been overlooked: the novena. Perennially popular in the Catholic Church, a novena is a nine-day period of prayer for a particular grace or intention, often offered as a supplication to a saint with expertise in a particular area. Novena, a volume that will enchant the eye and touch the soul, traces its history and brings together thirty-six of the best-known ...

Novena, a volume that will enchant the eye and touch the soul, traces its history and brings together thirty-six of the best-known novenas. Each is accompanied by a luminous image of its affiliated saint--fiercely beautiful and intensely human--adapted, with a contemporary air, from a traditional prayer card; by a brief discussion of the saint's life and particular specialty; and by instructions on when, and why, to use the novena. Novena is divided into four sections: novenas to the saints, the angels, the madonna (each revealing a different aspect of her personality), and the Divinity. An appendix cross-references specific concerns with appropriate novenas: We learn how the saints themselves transcended such problems as a turbulent youth, a difficult marriage, or abuse. The ideal gift for Easter and Mother's Day, this jewel of a book has year-round bestselling potential.

    Well worth it.

This is a collection of traditional novena's to some of the more popular saints, from St. Anthony of Padua to Mother Cabrini, also including various novena's to Our Lady and the archangels each with a coloured traditonal prayer card type illustration. Of particular interest in using this book for me was a novena to St. Jude - who says the impossible can't happen. Until I prayed this novena I had never met the criteria for getting a mortgage to buy a house. I prayed the novena and despite being a non-resident in a foreign country (we were told that this alone excluded us from eligibility), with only debt and no capital, we secured a mortgage using a personal loan as the deposit! (we were also told we didn't meet the criteria even for a personal loan) and are now paying less in repayments than we would if we were still renting! Excellent. Also, to show that St. Jude is an all embracing saint - we are a gay couple! Now that's a miracle!

    This book is a blessing!

I bought this book for my sister as one of her Christmas presents. She called me raving about how wonderful the book was and how she was already planning to say some novenas. She especially loved the section about Angels and she loved how it gave a history of the Saints. She was so excited about this book and told me that it is a real blessing to her. She told me she wants to buy this book for me and our sweet mom too. I can't wait to read it!

A thank you to St. Jude

This is a high quality book with lovely pictures, and a wide array of novena's to choose from. The book gives you information about each saint or angel, as well as the reasons behind why praying to them for a certain thing, may be. This book is sure to stand up to much use, and is a very useful book. This Catholic devotion is certainly an important one. I am now fulfilling my promise to publish my thanks to St. Jude in gratitude for his help.

Beautifully done. A prayer book and coffe table book in one!

The authors have done a wonderful job taking the mystery out of Novenas and prayers. This book would make a wonderful gift for those searching for spirituality. The prayers work, I know this from personal experience. I've purchase several copies to give as gifts this coming Christmas.
