I read Susan Carlisle’s first book, Heart Surgeon, Hero Husband? and loved it, so I immediately got this one when it came out. I’m not disappointed. I really enjoyed Nurse Maggie and Dr. Court as they fought the elements…and each other…to save lives in a Ghanaian hospital. I felt I was sweating along with her in the hut and riding through the jungle to save someone’s life. Good Read.

The Nurse He Shouldn’t Notice grabbed me from the beginning with its setting of a mission hospital in Northern Ghana and its heroine, nurse Maggie Everett, who holds the facility together on a shoestring and has a soft spot for an orphan boy. When Dr. Court Armstrong, a family representative of the philanthropic foundation that recently denied Maggie’s desperately-needed charitable grant, unexpectedly shows up at the primitive airstrip where plucky Maggie has gone to pick up her summer nursing volunteers, sparks fly and the action begins.
While the romance between Maggie and Court starts off with an instant attraction, this isn’t your “hop into bed now story.” The characters have a lovely dance of attraction throughout the book, the development of the romance is well-timed, and the culmination unrushed. The same care and attention is given to the relationship with the boy that Maggie hopes to adopt—stereotypes are avoided and nothing jumps out at the reader and screams “schmaltzy orphan story.”
This book was a trifecta of romance, adventure, and medical background blended into a well-paced story with a realistic setting. Maggie and Court’s story held my attention to the point that I read it in one sitting. I recommend The Nurse He Shouldn’t Notice as an enjoyable read that avoids the usual settings, the usual conflicts, and the usual clichés.
