Overview

Whether your child has been diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome or troubling symptoms are just becoming apparent, this book will guide you in the right direction.
AS manifests itself in an array of characteristics, including average to high intelligence, obsessive behavior, intense special interests, and difficulty dealing with everyday social situations. Children with AS often have trouble processing and expressing emotions appropriately; they may be physically awkward or have unique learning styles. This can lead to isolation, inappropriate educational placement, misdiagnosis, and high risk for anxiety, depression, and even suicide.
As a parent of a boy diagnosed with AS in 1994, Barbara Kirby found scant resources and support. She developed the award-winning OASIS (Online Asperger Syndrome Information and Support) Web site in l995 to help other parents find the information they need. She teamed up with Patricia Romanowski Bashe, now co-owner of OASIS and herself the mother of a son with AS, to write The OASIS Guide to Asperger Syndrome, the most complete resource for parents and teachers of children with AS.
Romanowski Bashe and Kirby have gathered the most up-to-date information from leading AS authorities, including Dr. Tony Attwood, who wrote the foreword. They know firsthand the joys and frustrations of raising children with AS, and they share their own experiences as well as those of dozens of parents facing the same challenges. You’ll learn what AS looks like and how it is diagnosed; how parents can accept and work with the diagnosis; what interventions, therapies, and medications are available; how to navigate through the school system, including the insand outs of special ed; how parents can raise their unique child, guiding him or her through the social, emotional, and intellectual challenges on the way to adulthood. The authors’ surveys of thousands of parents of kids with AS spotlight and address concerns you doubtless share. This practical, sympathetic guide will help you face the particular challenges of loving and raising a child with AS.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
Written with sensitivity and insight, this book serves as an invaluable source of information about Asperger syndrome, a commonly misunderstood disorder that afflicts 2.5 million children. The authors, who own and operate the OASIS web site, cover the full spectrum of issues that face parents and caretakers of children with AS, from diagnosis through adulthood. Throughout the book there are listings of additional resources and reading materials, but the information provided here is so comprehensive that it could well serve as a one-stop reference for both parents and professionals. And the epilogue alone, entitled "54 Ways to Make the World a Better Place for Persons with Asperger Syndrome," should be required reading for parents of children with this disorder.
Brenda Smith Myles
If someone were to ask me to suggest the most useful resource about AS, I would not hesitate for an instant: The Oasis Guide to Asperger Syndrome. The authors have presented all the current information on AS with admirable clarity and empathy. This is a must-read book for parents, educators, and individuals with AS alike.
Carol Gray
This book will be of genuine and continual assistance to those working on behalf of children and adults with Asperger Syndrome. Rarely does one find such a wealth of quality information all between the same two covers. Some books boast and swagger. This one quietly walks up and raises the bar. This book has important work to do, and it is more than up to the task.
Diane Twachtman Cullen
If it is important for parents and professionals to be on the same page,— and it surely is — I strongly recommend starting with any page in the Oasis Guide to Asperger Syndrome! There is something in this book for everyone. For parents there is sound advice, comforting support, and remarkable insights that are sure to inspire. For professionals, the book offers a compass whose true north will point the way towards success when the changing terrain of Asperger syndrome renders typical educational road maps ineffective. There is even a special gift for those with Asperger syndrome — recognition of their struggles, and an acceptance and profound respect for who they are. This book is both inspired and inspiring!

If I had one cent for every person who has ever said, Where would my family be without Barb Kirby and OASIS?, I would be as rich as Midas. But some things are better even than gold. Thank goodness Barbara L. Kirby and Patricia Romanowski Bashe know that! Together, they have provided the community of Asperger Syndrome with more than a rainbow's end of the shiny stuff. I wonder if they knew that when they finished taking the OASIS website and turning it into a stuffed-full-with-good-things book, they would also be opening a wondrous treasure chest brimming with understanding and support. .
Publishers Weekly
Parents struggling to find answers about their children often have to wade through pedantic and confusing mazes. Frequently, books about medical or developmental conditions offer little more than the author's personal story or a textbookish monotone. Refreshingly, these authors delve into the shady, often misunderstood world of pervasive developmental disorders, of which perhaps the most well-known is autism, with clarity, warmth and amazing depth, focusing on Asperger Syndrome (AS). The authors present unfamiliar terms and jargon with full explanations, and with none of the patronizing tone sometimes encountered in the medical world. The reader is not left with the personal story alone, and forced to go off on her own expedition for information. The authors (both mothers of AS children) effectively trace this disorder from the onset of symptoms through adulthood. While most parents may be tempted to skip straight to Chapter 2 to devour the list of telltale signs and apply them to their own child, they would do well to start at the beginning. The book grew out of the authors' OASIS Web site (Online Asperger Syndrome Information and Support), which has furthered AS research immeasurably (the site's response rates alone provide important information about potential numbers of people with AS). These authors have certainly done their homework. Besides invaluable practical information, parents and other interested persons will find comfort in the book's welcoming tone and the knowledge that they are not alone. (Oct.) Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
Library Journal
Though few Americans have ever heard of Asperger Syndrome (AS), recent studies suggest its rate of occurrence may be as high as seven in 1000. Also known as high-functioning autism, AS is characterized by obsessive behavior, normal to high intelligence, and deficits in social interaction, communication, and imagination. Bashe and Kirby, both mothers of children with AS, rely heavily on professional literature for their book. However, they also draw upon the results of numerous parent surveys they have posted on their OASIS (Online Asperger Syndrome Information & Support) web site. Their text covers clinical aspects of AS in practical language. The authors also deal with taking control of your child's education and therapeutic program, as well looking at the whole child, including areas professionals tend to neglect. As awareness of AS grows among both professionals and the general public, so will the need for a book of this quality. A valuable purchase for most large and mid-sized collections. Oasis Guide to Asperger Syndrome: Advice, Support, Insight, and Inspiration

From the time that my son was diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome, at the age of 3 ½, our family knew that the idyllic life we had anticipated, would never be. At that time, in 1998, there wasn¿t a lot written about Asperser¿s Syndrome. Fortunately, I was just becoming a little more knowledgeable about the internet and quickly found my way to OASIS, the Online Asperger Syndrome Information and Support network. Barb Kirby was there from my first day to help smooth the pathways for other families as no one was really there to help smooth her way. She soon found Patty Romanowski Bashe and together they have created the complete guide to help families through the maze of diagnoses, acronyms, treatments, diets, and educational interventions applicable to those with Asperger¿s Syndrome, with the publishing of the OASIS Guide to Asperger Syndrome. Because of Barb¿s reputation, as soon as I saw this book, I knew that it would be thorough. What I didn¿t realize is how easy it would be to pick the book up and turn to any page and find information that would prove to be helpful to parents and other family members dealing with the overwhelming issues related to having a child on the autism spectrum. It is difficult to point to which section of the book is most helpful, because at different times, the various chapters have guided me to my child. At various times, I thought ¿Why me¿.why did this happen to ME?¿ But as this book states, ¿¿ the person who is working the hardest in all of this is ¿.your child¿. Easy to forget with my parental self-pitying. After I read that, I began to stop feeling sorry for myself and instead began thinking of myself as a ¿team member¿. From then, we could begin to regain some of our hopefulness and took on the challenge as a family team goal. This new edition has been brought up-to-date to include some of the newer ideas, research and treatments related to Asperger¿s Syndrome. They include various treatments, medications and discussions of a range of products available to families like ours that are desperately seeking the magic bullet for our child (there are none unfortunately). However what Barb and Patty have given us with this, is what I consider, the COMPLETE manual for all things related to Asperger¿s Syndrome; it is the bright ray of optimism that although there are certainly many difficult times ahead, there is also a lot of hope. There are many of us parents and professionals that Barb has brought together under the OASIS umbrella and are working arm in arm to find out more and share those successes with others. Thank you for the NEW ¿OASIS Guide to Asperger Syndrome¿. I thought the original was as good as it gets, but this one is even better! ~Ellen T

The Oasis Guide to Asperger Syndrome

This is 'THE' Book!!! The book We, as parents and caregivers of children with AS have been waiting for! This is by far, the most comprehensive Guide on Asperger Syndrome available! It is packed full of practical and technical information, insight, support and encouragement. A true Treasure of a Resource, keeping in mind the 'whole child' and family on every page. I couldn't put it down once I started reading it. A real MUST HAVE! Thank you Barb and Patty!

Very thorough and well written book

This book is full of information to help people with and parents of those with Aspergers. Written by 2 moms of children with Aspergers, the book is written in terms we can all understand. The topics/chapters cover many details and are easy to follow. I found this book VERY useful and informative in finding the common symptoms within my own child. I highly recommend this book for anyone wishing to learn more about Aspergers Syndrome.

    I Also Recommend:

    informative

As someone being evaluated for Aspergers Syndrome soon, I thought I would check this book out to learn more about it. In my opinion, it was more of an advise book for parents rather than a book explaining about Aspergers. But that aside, it was very informative and I would recommend to anyone wanting to know more about Aspergers Syndrome, especially to those parents.

    Practical and Insight-filled

Filled with useful information on everything from initial diagnosis, interventions, treatments, medications, school issues, family issues and so much more. All presented with sound support from current research. A must for any parent whose child has been diagnosed with Asperger's/High Functioning Autism. The authors' personal insights and humor are a very nice touch. The reader is made aware of the struggles faced by many who are touched in one way or another by Asperger's. A very good resource for school professional libraries as an overview of the disorder, its complexities and challenges in meeting the needs of those with Asperger's/HFA.

The Quintessential Resource for Parents and Professionals dealing with children with Asperger Syndrome

Almost 3 years ago, my now 6 year old was diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome. The last few years have been a blur of acronyms, treatment plans, IEPs and lots of research into my son's world. Through the journey, the advice and guidance of these 2 authors have kept many parents going and have given hope and help to so many of us families maneuvering the tender relationships of Asperger families and those that work, play and love us. I am heartened that they have collaborated on such an important and timely book. And a masterpiece it is!! I couldn't put this book down as I read about the '54 Ways to Make the World a Better Place for Persons with Asperger Syndrome'. The help on school, social, and other issues are written in easily read style and format. I find myself carrying this book around with me, to read at red lights and while waiting for my little guy to finally 'tie his shoes'. This is a must buy for anyone who lives with and/or loves a child (or adult) with Asperger's Syndrome.
