Overview

An inside look at a renowned marine biologist’s quest to save an abandoned, endangered seal pup

Only eleven hundred Hawaiian monk seals survive in the wild. Without intervention, they face certain extinction within fifty years. When a two-day-old Hawaiian monk seal pup, later named Kauai Pup 2, or KP2, is attacked and abandoned by his mother on a beach, he is rushed off on a journey that will take him across the ocean to the California marine lab of eminent wildlife biologist Dr. Terrie M. Williams. As Williams works with the boisterous KP2 to save his species, she forms a lasting bond with him that illustrates the importance of the survival of all earth’s creatures and the health of the world’s oceans.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble

In a sense, Kauai Pup 2 (or KP2) was lucky to be an endangered species. If he hadn't been a Hawaiian monk seal, this frail pup probably would have been allowed to die after being attacked by ocean predator and abandoned by his mother. Instead, he was protected and watched, shipped nearly half way across the Pacific to receive the life-saving help he needed. Told by an experienced California marine biologist, The Odyssey of KP2 follows this playful, boisterous, slippery creature as he establishes relationships with human that sometimes place him in danger. This is a story of one seal, but in a sense, it is the story of every animal facing extinction. Editor's recommendation.

    highly recommended

Terrific. You ot only learn about endangered animals, but you become engaged with this particular seal, KP2. I appreciated the deals of care and training. The emotional connection with an animal which you are trying to preserve combined with the limits set by animal science in not disturbing the animal are all laid out. An emotional read.

Hawaiian Monk Seals need to be protected.

We need to protect these amazing animals. If we don't, we will have another extinction on our hands. We have lost a lot of amazing species due to extinction. Like the Bald Ibis, Tasmanian Tiger, Lesser Bilby, and Caribbean Monk Seal. These and a million other species are all extinct thanks to us. If we don't act now, Hawaiian Monk Seals and several others species will be in grave danger.

An exceptional read this true story reads like fiction as the fate of the creature from natural predators and federal bureaucracy almost spins from one precipice to another. I very highly recommend this book and Professor William's other biographical episode Hunter's Breath.
