School Library Journal
Gr 10 Up—A largely female group of manga creators has crafted an informative and enjoyable guide to its popular "xxxHOLiC" series (Del Rey). Major characters, connections to Japanese legend, mysterious encounters, various spirits, connections to other CLAMP works, and explorations of physical environments are among some of the topics examined, while results from readers' polls, trivia questions, and favorite quotes provide an extra element of fun. Of particular note is an interesting conversation between manga artist Hirohiko Araki, the creator of "Jojo's Bizarre Adventure" (Viz Media), and CLAMP's Tsubaki Nekoi, which includes a discussion on the drawing style of "xxxHOLiC" and how CLAMP works together as a team, as well as an essay by Japanese mystery and supernatural novelist Nanami Kamon, who provides insight into philosophies found in the series. Most pages feature beautiful black-and-white reproductions of characters, cover art, panels, and scenes as found in the original volumes, as well as preliminary character sketches and various artists' interpretations of characters. Pages devoted to Yuko's fashion and favorite things stand out with purple hues replacing the black ink, while colorful glossy poster pages that preface the volume are especially attractive. As this title was originally published in Japan in 2006, more recent information is not included; however, there is plenty in this book to keep fans happy.—Lara McAllister, Halifax Public Libraries, Nova Scotia
