School Library Journal
Gr 6–8—Environmental concerns are the focus of the case studies in this series. Unlike the denser content of the "Diminishing Resources" series (Morgan Reynolds), these four books break the information into shorter bites with frequent graphic insets. A topic overview is followed by five chapters that detail specific examples and conclude with a recap under the heading "Sustainable Futures" that posits ideas for change. One page devoted to debating the issues suggests roles for six individuals who stand to lose or gain by moving forward with the projects and a suggestion that they be judged by classroom peers who act as the ruling government. Within the specific examples, related issues are set apart in a red sticker shape. Full-color photos appear on each spread, frequently airbrushed into the blue or yellow topographic background that appears on every page. Charts and maps are undersized to the point of losing their legibility, and dark blue, purple, or red type within black text boxes is difficult to read. Each chapter concludes with a notebook page of hand-written bullet points listing positive and negative aspects of the issues. While there is a distinct intention to balance the information presented, it is also clear that action needs to be taken to save the people, animals, and environments that are endangered throughout the world. Debaters and report writers will find plenty of information and perhaps a cause to pursue further at the same time.—Janet S. Thompson, Chicago Public Library
